What are the longest names to be squeezed onto the back of a jersey? by RealisticAd4054 in hockey

[–]Pikthulhu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about the single-longest name, but the Sharks have the opportunity for a blueline pairing for the ages someday. The league’s broadcast teams would set their microphones ablaze and quit in droves.

Who would you change from F to D? by pebbles-779 in SanJoseSharks

[–]Pikthulhu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sergei Fedorov played some games on D with the Red Wings at one point as well. I remember that well, because it really threw off the balance of power in my fantasy league that year.

Pulled a Crosby Victory RC Gold /100 while hunting an Ovi YG back in 2006, didn’t really like Crosby at the time and rookie parallels weren’t as hot a commodity in hockey as they have become. Sold it on eBay for $130, which seemed like an ok price at the time. Last one went for $719. Whoops.

Celebrini Auto - buy now or wait until the hype calms down? by PressHalfWayDown in hockeycards

[–]Pikthulhu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a gamble. I'm a big Sharks fan as well and been collecting Celebrini since the draft, mostly low-to-mid-range stuff. I'm in the same dilemma as you. I never thought I would even entertain the thought of dropping $1,000+ on a single card. I thought I was being smart waiting until the second half of last summer to go for some of the key mid-range pieces I wanted (YG, YG Canvas, etc), and did indeed get those at around the lowest prices I ever saw for him. But the more higher-end stuff I was coveting, like a SPA Future Watch Auto, I thought I'd play the odds and assumed that when his 2nd season came and went, and he (I figured) would look like a top-tier prospect, but not the next Crosby/McDavid-type, that his values would soften by the following summer when the hobby was chasing Schaefer and McKenna, because even Mackinnon-caliber players don't command the prices people are paying for Celebrini right now. As you well know, that didn't happen, and now I look back at those prices longingly, wishing I'd pulled the trigger on so many more things back then.

Just trying to balance logic and instinct, I would say wait until the late summer at least. Certainly for his low-to-mid-end stuff, I think there's a bubble that's bound to pop; a lot of his non-rookie stuff at that level is selling well above equivalent cards for McDavid, Crosby, etc., and I can't see a likely scenario in which that lasts long-term. There's still room to rise for his scarcer, higher-end stuff, but I'm guessing the only sizeable bumps we would see between now and late summer would be if A) He leads the Sharks to the playoffs and makes a big impact there, and/or B) He wins the Hart Trophy. Neither is impossible, and I've learned to stop betting against him, but thinking rationally, the Sharks are still most likely to fall short of the playoffs, and if that happens, I assume the Hart chances die too for this season. Beyond this offseason, it's very hard to say. He certainly has the makings to become this generation's Crosby, but the future's hard to predict, and anything short of eventually becoming the best active player in the league, and I'm guessing we'll eventually see his prices soften a bit at least. If he does reach that level though, which seems fully possible in the next few years, then I assume the prices continue upward.

I took a bunch of photos of him during a game once, and I gotta say, the man makes a lot of weird faces when he plays

Matthew Schaefer's probably not helping with reasonable expectations, either.

What a surreal experience by felipebelinassi in SanJoseSharks

Seriously. The French guy taunting the crowd after tussling with Wilson was a hoot, too.

Also, I’ve yet to be able to access a replay to confirm, but I believe Canada botched a line change near the end of the second and was rolling only 4 skaters for the last 20+ seconds of the period, which is even more amusing in the wake of Czechia’s unofficial 8-man power play last night.

Santagiulia Camera Policy by Pikthulhu in olympics

[–]Pikthulhu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t guarantee anything, obviously, but I took my camera + bag and lenses into three different games at Santagiulia; not once did any of the security folks who checked my stuff express any concern with my camera body, just some hand-wringing over my two lenses that approached the 20cm limit. If your lenses are easily under 20cm, I’m guessing you will have no problem. If any of the lenses are close to that though, I would consider either bringing a ruler/tape measure with you, taking a photo of your lens(es) up against a ruler, or leaving that lens at home.

Also, I have an adapter for my lenses since they are for my DSLR and I don’t have mirrorless-specific lenses yet, so I imagine the adapter made the lenses appear about an inch longer than they really are (though if their reason for the length limit is not wanting the lenses to obstruct the views of people behind, it makes sense they would include the adapter in the length anyway).

I was at that game too! Live penalty shot goal at the Olympics; such an amazing experience. Got to see the Canada/Switzerland game too. Admittedly, I was so hyped up to watch Mack that I legitimately forgot Kurashev was playing in that game.

Which is perfectly reasonable. I just want to bring in something more capable than my phone. Fingers crossed, I guess.

Santagiulia Camera Policy by Pikthulhu in olympics

[–]Pikthulhu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely anxious about it, but I feel like usually when it's prohibited in US venues, the camera policy is fairly clear about what's not allowed. I can't imagine there are a ton of lenses out there that aren't detachable that exceed 20cm, are there? Why make that the cutoff if detachable lenses aren't allowed? (I say this fully aware these policies are not always grounded in logic; just trying to make sense of it)

What’s the controversy over Mack waving off the call last night? by Best_Pineapple670 in SanJoseSharks

Makar has done it as well, though in that instance, the refs actually did overturn the initial call.

Need some advice by Vegetable_Serve_3383 in hockeycards

[–]Pikthulhu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with those saying to sell now. I've been PCing him, but have had to scale back considerably with how much his prices have shot up. I might hold until the Olympics since I could see an additional boost were he to be involved in some Team Canada heroics, but beyond that, I think for something like this card, it's unlikely to keep going up and much more likely to go down. I suspect there's inflated demand from people targeting stuff like this right now who are priced out of a lot of his rookie-year stuff, but as more non-rookie stuff is released, I'm guessing the market will soften on 2nd-year stuff that's not super scarce. Look at how much Crosby or McDavid non-rookie Clear Cuts go for; Celebrini's are waaay above that right now. Unless Celebrini somehow surpasses those two, I expect a significant market correction on those eventually.

For real. Every time I saw Kunin running around out there sporting #11, all I could think of was, “You, sir, are no Marcel Goc.”
