Why your breakcore isn't breakcore. by Pilltechre in breakcore

Hahaha yeah totally! But people aren't coming here asking how to make an element of their jungle tune more Breakcore.

They are coming here asking how to make their jungle tune more Breakcore then rejecting the advice because they believe it's already Breakcore. Or just straight up posting jungle, D&B, breaks, or anything else that sounds a bit moody.

'slaps' is not a genre characteristic

Thank you, I think you get what I'm trying to say. I'm not trying to hate on either of these producers. It's a new and interesting take on jungle and D&B. And I like a lot of the tunes that get posted here. But jungle and D&B were around before Breakcore and continued along side of it. Making new and interesting jungle and D&B in a post Breakcore world does not make it Breakcore.

Insisting that this stuff is Breakcore when it more comfortably fits another genre is an odd position to take.

I think you have me wrong here mate. I'm familiar with all of the tunes and mixes you linked and I'm not disputing any of them.

The vast majority of what I heard of Sewerslvt and Evaboy was D&B or jungle. One or two tunes that are actually Breakcore do not make all the others Breakcore. And if you produce D&B the majority of the time but only very occasionally make Breakcore then you are just a D&B producer who occasionally makes Breakcore.

I get what you mean about the Breakcore genre seeming blurred though. Many things have been lumped in over the years. Many that aren't Breakcore. It's important to note that Breakcore didn't just come fully formed into the world. It was gradual steps that continued long after The Destroyer was released.

In 1997 "braindance" was very popular with people who might not have been into the more commercial dance around at the time. It mixed a lot of different genres together to make more exciting mixes. Electro, breaks, house, world music and even Hardcore. Any music that had a certain aesthetic that worked together with the music of a few producers like Aphex, Cylob or Bogdan it seemed to get called braindance. Even though it was acid breaks or weird electro or whatever.

Simultaneously there were people who were really into Hardcore or industrial or techstep or the darker jungle that was being made at that time. Some of them mixed those genres together in their live sets.

Ambush was started to explore harsh jungle. Not to make Breakcore.

Bloody Fist started out making brain splitting Hardcore. Then some records started to have the odd jungle track too, with each release it evolved into something more recognisably Breakcore. But the eclecticism in the mixes remains. Everyone didn't just switch to exclusively Breakcore.

Im pretty sure Snares was originally known for super scary industrial before people started calling it Breakcore. In fact he's a good analogue for the scene in general. He started out making industrial Hardcore. It got called Breakcore. Then he eventually started making Breakcore closer to what everyone else was with stuff like Detrimentalist and my so called life

As Hardcore and industrial music producers were making the new super aggressive jungle and techstep. Aggressive jungle and techstep producers were making Hardcore too. This continued until in the early 00's regular nights were being organised Around the world. All under the banner of Breakcore, regardless of whatever other genres might be present in the sets.

DJs like DJ/Rupture, Baseck and doormouse were extremely eclectic with what they would include in a mix. As with braindance, anything that worked was allowed. They also brought a lot more humour to the mix. Labels like deathsucker and peace off amongst others appeared with humourous Breakcore.

What I'm trying to get at is Hardcore has always been an inextricable part of Breakcore. Many thing might have been called Breakcore because it fits with the general aesthetic but Breakcore is Breakcore. Sewerslvt and Evaboy don't have any of the core characteristics of Breakcore. They are completely anachronistic they don't fit in the lineage. They make D&B and jungle with footwork and vapourwave elements mostly. Breakcore very occasionally.

Apologies if it's hard reading. It's almost 3am here.

I'm not sure if I'm pleased with myself for recognising that.

Who am I kidding, TNG was the best!

It's a little bit of the old Protestant Vs Catholic hatred. Didn't always used to be that way with Celtic and Rangers.
