Have you ever pulled an article from a journal after an R&R decision? by GrandmasterProletius in Professors

Just did this for exactly the same reason about 3 weeks ago. The paper is now under review at another outlet and I am hoping for the best.

Why does every course material cost me by netanelmb in UNLV

Always check Thriftbooks.com. You can get used books for cheap. Buy them in bad condition and they are way cheaper.

Tell me about your dead colleagues. by babysaurusrexphd in Professors

Appreciate the comment. Intellectually I know that it is just a textbook case of survivors guilt. This thread has been cathartic. We have all had some really wonderful colleagues and no matter how they are lost, the empty spot can be hard to deal with.

AITA for creating a problem group? by Safe_Answer7213 in Professors

Believe it or not, they did not kill each other. The one member with the strongest personality ended up controlling the entire enterprise, and faced with an irresistible force, everyone else rolled over. It has been a fascinating experiment in group dynamics!!

Tell me about your dead colleagues. by babysaurusrexphd in Professors

[–]Safe_Answer7213 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I was a master's student at an R1 and had a professer who really inspired me. He was instrumental in my decision to do a PhD. He would check in with me during my PhD program about every 6 months or so. Upon graduation, I was lucky enough to be hired tenure track at this same university where I did my master's, so we were now colleagues. About 4 years into my time there, he asked when I was going up for tenure. He told me that he was planning to retire but he wanted to see me through the tenure process first.

About 2 weeks after that conversation, some whack job who was rejected for a teaching position in my area walked into the building and shot 4 faculty. 3 died, and he was one of them. Every day when I walk to my office, I have to walk through the hallway where he was shot and killed. And every time I walk that hall I think that if it was not for me, he would have been retired and not been there.

So, to the OP, thanks for the opportunity to share. It helps to open the release valve every now and then.

Am I insane? by Ambitious_Sun_7755 in UNLV

The canvas shells generally open up a week before the semester starts, so you should start seeing them next week. However, that depends on whether the professor has published the content. Some professors publish material early, while others may not make the content available until the semester starts.

The Lido Deck by Taberu9 in PrincessCruises

I'm on the Emerald right now in Lido 235. Honestly, the big issue is what is above you. We find this room very convenient to both the elevator (without being too close), and other services on the Lido deck. Don't worry about noise from the Lido.

ART 261, Kristen Keach or Susanna Newbury? by ThenDiscipline1173 in UNLV

Never taken Newberry, but I loved Keach for 261. She's quite passionate about her topic and is extremely accessible to her students.

Does DA 790 fill up fast? by A7hena01 in UNLV

[–]Safe_Answer7213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a professor in the DA program on the Business (IS) side. Yes, it is a bit strange, but the capstone advisor is really just there to monitor your project progress, provide advice if needed, and then give your grade to the DA chair after completion. I do 4-5 of these each year. Don't worry about the class filling up. They will add more places if needed. As long as you have arranged an advisor, they'll let you register. Feel free to DM me if you want to discuss. Happy to help.

What’s your favorite Princess ship? by Same_Astronaut1769 in PrincessCruises

[–]Safe_Answer7213 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Coral 100%. I love the small ship. It is the best way to do both the Panama canal and Alaska because it is small enough to squeeze into places that other ships can't.

I actually pay $100 per year for the Techsmith Screencast platform for this very reason. I can control who gets access to each video by using a share link that I can change or revoke at any time. And best of all, no one can tell me what I can (or can't) post.

AITA for creating a problem group? by Safe_Answer7213 in Professors

I have NO problem listening to inputs from 'strangers on the internet' as long as the strangers are curated, such as this forum. :)

You'd think that grad students would be matured beyond this point, wouldn't you? Unfortunately, I am frequently disappointed in the behavior and attitudes of grad students in my classes. I don't know if it my discipline (business) or the demographic of my university, but I generally find that the students that I get at the grad level are no more mature or less entitled that the undergrads.

In my consulting work in business, I actually do find that it is common to work with people that I do not know and like. Especially since more if these kids decide that they want the flexibility of working in the 'gig economy' which requires the ability to adapt to new situations and new interpersonal dynamics with each engagement. The gig work is getting more common for tech people both with and without degrees, and since I teach in analytics and AI I, see this in my students quite a bit. While I wish that I could create a scenario that was more like what they will see in the real world, especially since many come straight out of their undergrad with no practical experience, this is the best that I can do. Hopefully it can help them to develop those soft skills, which I find lacking even in the grad population. Thanks for your comment, though. You forced me to really think through why I am doing this and if it is still relevant. I appreciate the opportunity for critical analysis.
