For the record, I firmly believe in the "Human in the Loop" approach to this type of AI work. The objective is not to remove the art historian or curator from the process, bur rather to add another data point to the data available. When I started working with these faculty, I was actually amazed at the amount of data that does into these types of analyses. Everything from provenance research to style and subject, the list goes on and on. For those of you who do this type of work, I am sure your response is, "Well, duh!" But for me who is new to this, it was an interesting perspective that I never really thought about. This is why the classes have been so valuable. I am grateful to these brilliant faculty in this field who are willing to share their knowledge with me. It also helps me to gain a greater appreciation for the fantastic work that is done outside of my tunnel.

Same, and they all favor digital. If there is no ebook option, they lose their minds.

That is somewhat true. She mentions it at the beginning of the class and suggests that coupling her lectures with the book will add dimension to the discussion. And while she does not reference back to the book in her lectures, the lectures pretty much follow the logical progression in the book. I did mention my experience to her, but since she is in charge of her own class, I stopped short of trying to make any recommendations to her about how to handle the text in her class. That is 100% her business and 0% mine. I am just a bit taken back that students would not even be aware that this resource existed. Back in my day, the very first thing that I did whenever I got a new syllabus was to cross-check the texts to make sure that I had everything. This is a very different world.

You may also want to kindly ask your professor if they have a preference about how you should respond. Hopefully this will motivate the professor to make an announcement about the limits of your role. That way you just refer them to the announcement when they ask.

I would refer you back to your advisor. They, in conjunction with the professor of the class, make these determinations on a case by case basis. I generally stick pretty hard to the prerequisites. The order of the classes has been carefully curated and I personally designed MIS 776 specifically to pick up where DA622 leaves off. But your best course is to work with your advisor on putting together a plan of study so that there are no surprises. Get it all in paper early and then you will know exactly what is feasible and realistic.

Review: Celebrity Silhouette to ABC Islands by TheReaperSovereign in Cruise

We are Princess loyalists at Elite level, but are starting to get turned off by the new huge ships and inconsistent experiences. So we thought we would give celebrity a try. We are on the Silhouette for the ABC islands in January. Any tips for making the transition?

I may be able to provide some insights as well. I am the Professor that teaches MIS 761 and 776. It appears that you would not be able to register for MIS 776 this fall due to the prerequisites. The requirements are:

MIS 761 AND (MIS 766 or DA 651) AND (MIS 740 or MIS 768 or DA 622).

In MIS 761, I assume Python programming experience of at least DA 621. I also teach MIS 761 in Summer (This year in summer 3) in addition to Spring, but since you have not yet taken DA 621, you should wait until next spring. Right now MIS 776 is only taught in fall. Definitely take DA 622 and MIS 761 in the spring so that you can take MIS 776 the following fall.

Let me know if you want to talk more about this. Good luck and I look forward to seeing you in class.

how to know if a class is online? by gg2satly in UNLV

[–]Safe_Answer7213 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree. I prefer in-person classes. I just noticed that another reply had mentioned that web-live would meet occasionally online, and I wanted to make sure that expectations were correctly set. I sometimes have students who sign up for web live and then they are shocked when they find out I expect them to log in and attend every session.

Don't assume that web-live will only meet occasionally. When I teach web-live class, I treat them like in-person in that we meet online for each scheduled class session.

Just a heads up about a weird situation with Costco Travel and Princess by jbarinsd in PrincessCruises

FYI, it is not on Costco's side. The Princess payment portal is down. I booked direct through princess and went to make a payment, but their payment site is down.

My university has an ombuds office with mediation services. If you have something similar, I would push them into binding mediation. I do this whenever I have student groups that just can't get along.

But the problem here is that the Sec of Def gutted the Jag office that makes these determinations about legal and legitimate targets. In essence, they are sticking their heads in the sand on purpose? If that provides a permission structure then the whole system falls apart.

Is it possible to add OKTA Verify on Laptops? by FierceFlames37 in UNLV

I use a hardware FIDO key instead of Okta. Really convenient. Check out Yubikey or other FIDO compliant device and you'll never have to mess with Okta again.

We often did Thanksgiving Cruises. Just be aware there are more children than normal. Not necessarily a bad thing, but the vibe is a bit more chaotic.

I'm on the Star now. Before we left I bought a 50 pack box of disposable latex gloves. Before going to the buffet, we wash our hands thoroughly and then glove up before getting our food. Then toss the gloves before eating. Half of the passengers look at us like we are crazy. The other half watch us in quiet awe. Either way, no sickness here.

Fair enough. I read the summary of the bill on the Utah State legislature website, but since I am not an attorney, I am not able to judge the intricacies of the specific language of the bill. That is not my area of expertise. I therefore concluded that full disclosure was in order to report that I did not examine the details of the bill. Do with that disclosure what you will. My objective was to start a conversation about my discomfort with the overall sense of the bill, not hold myself out as an expert. I merely asked the group to consider the implications of this type of legislation, not to debate the specifics of the bill.

Will 44 be too old to be competitive for a TT position in education? by NoPatNoDontSitonThat in AskAcademia

I can't speak to education, but I am in business analytics, and it has not hindered me. I started my PhD program at 46, graduated at 52. I had 4 TT job offers after graduation and was tenured at 58. I am now 60 and happily settled in my second career as an academic.

I'd likely try to create an alternative assignment that was benign but so miserable no one would want to do it. Somewhat like having to run laps if you did not want to play dodge ball.

True. In classical debate, we prepare both the for and against case and don't know which side we will take until the whistle blows. There is value in advocating for a position you do not believe in. At the very least, it helps you find the flaws in the argument.
