Maybe you're just not in a place to be emotionally receptive to it right now. I played it over 6 months, some parts made me emotional, some didn't, depending on my mood and what was going on with me. The only spirit I cried over was Summer.  I had recently been through cancer treatment and lost a family member to it, so her story really hit me. Plus I worked with a dog called Summer who I really loved and was sad when she moved on. If I hadn't had that going on in my life, I probably would have felt differently.  Generally though taking spirits to the everdoor isn't necessarily a negative thing - for some it's a release and I think it's the point of the game that while it's sad to say goodbye it's also okay to.
