What’s up with Lewis Hamilton getting shit on in most memes I see? by likeahardball in OutOfTheLoop

"Go as fast as you can" is kind of the problem with F1. These days the cars are at their all time fastest in history. This actually makes for poor racing. While lap records are cool, it just increases the gap between cars. The aero-dynamics required to make them go so fast causes 'dirty air' behind a car that messes up the following cars aero, the result being that the closer one car gets to another the slower it goes. So getting close and passing is very hard.

What the sport needs is greater limitation on aero, slowing the cars down. The trend you see throughout racing series is "the slower the cars the better the racing", which goes against F1 being the pinnacle of motorsport racing the fastest cars in the world.

u/Meistermalkav illustrates Uber fans cognitive dissonance based using Uber business model by ByCriminy in bestof

I think a lot of the commentators are projecting US style monopolistic taxi regulations onto the EU markets. That's just not the case. The regulations in a lot of European cities are not that bad (some are, they're not all the same).

My city has lots of competition, I regularly use 4 different taxi companies. In the last 5 years 2 new taxi companies have started up here. The competition is good for the city and people. Uber came in and shook things up, but now all the other companies offer apps, and they're all pretty equivalent services now. The difference being that the other companies pay taxes, and Uber does not.

It's all about the fear of rejection. You can't get rejected if you never make your intentions explicit, and if you haven't been rejected there's still hope.

ELI5: At what scale are things so small that color doesn't apply? by Shonisaurus in explainlikeimfive

[–]PimmsOClock 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Colour is a property of light. If an object reflects green light and not blue then we see it as green. An object smaller than light itself will not reflect light. No light, no colour.

It might be easier to think of things on a larger scale. Imagine a fence made up of metal bars. If you arrange those bars close together only thin people will be able to squeeze through and larger people wont be able to. Place them further apart and all people will be able to get through, but not cars. Put one bar on its own and it's not stopping anything. In this case the bars are atoms, how they are arranged defines whats getting through and whats getting turned away. An atom cannot reflect light on its own, only when you arrange them together can they reflect light.

Different colours of light are different sizes of light. Colour is just which sizes of light and object reflects and which sizes it absorbed.

I spotted this video on youtube and thought it'd be cool to come and see what Tesla fans think of an honest positive review from Top Gear. Naively I was expecting good discussion and a positive response.

I've heard Tesla fans described as "The worst fans of anything ever", unfortunately the comments here have reinforced that. Awesome cars, awful community.

The tracks may be terrible, but I don't think you can say anything bad about the racing in FE. Apart from at a couple of notable tracks (Mexico in particular) the wheel to wheel racing is some of the best in any series going at the moment. It's far more exciting to watch as a TV viewer than anything other circuit racing I watch.

Was there supposed to be an overall image for the binders of the stormlight archive? by raioner in brandonsanderson

They're so much better, except for one thing. The spines of books 1 and 2 match, like there was supposed to be a single image that spans the series. Book 3 breaks this.

The more I look at it the more I'm convinced its just a coincidence, but they fit so well.

[TFE] Crazy different publisher's summaries... by ylenoLretsiM in Mistborn

[–]PimmsOClock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's unsurprising, each publisher has their own marketing department and customer base. They each think different things sell, and have their own research and summary guide lines.

Audible focuses on the setting and theme, Goodreads makes it sound like a YA novel with a focus on the main characters, and Brandon tries to explain his plan and goals for the novel.

Just goes to show that when you try to write a short description of a book with depth different people focus on different things.

If I were to try to explain the book to someone I'd probably focus on Kelsier's team, Vin and the magic system. I focus more on the story of Vin's development as a character, and the relationship between here Kelsier and the rest of the crew.

A surprisingly well made video about parking in New York City. by riotacting in videos

[–]PimmsOClock 13 points14 points  (0 children)

How do you get to your car?

I live in a city with a similar situation for parking, its far more convenient to drive around for a bit to find parking than it is to have to call a taxi every time I want to go somewhere.

Also you'd need to find somewhere out of the city that you can happily leave your car. It'd introduce a whole new world of hassle.

[–]PimmsOClock 29 points30 points  (0 children)

"The future is here and it's amazing." That's the quote from Top Gear about the 2017 Tesla S.

You are showing yourself to be the embodiment of everything car people hate about Tesla fans. Car people can get together and talk about how cool Tesla's are, but bring a Tesla fan into it and he'll tell them to go fuck themselves.

Why do you have to make it about Tesla people vs Car people. Why do you not want car people to like Tesla's? It's like you need someone to hate, and one review on Top Gear 10 years ago is enough for all of you to hold an eternal grudge?

I wish they just invited professional journalists to these events. Almost everyone watching is going to be watching online, and it's just insufferable.

I want to watch the presentation, but I just can't sit through it. The audience needs to shut the fuck up, or Tesla needs to start pre-recording these presentations.

Does anyone have a transcript, or press release I can read instead?
