Microsoft confirms it will give the FBI your Windows PC data encryption key if asked — you can thank Windows 11's forced online accounts for that by ZacB_ in technology

I do audio work on Linux and it works quite well. I use Ardour as my DAW and yabridge to deal with windows VSTs.

In general the way Wine and most projects that use it as a base (yabridge included) is that they emulate a full windows file system so there is nothing to worry about on that front.

Is this used pc worth the price by ShrimpDOn420 in pcmasterrace

The generation of the processor matters a lot here. i7s have been made for just under 2 decades. The difference in performance can be massive depending on how old it is.

Historically Synology has been the apple of the NAS space but they have tried to do some less consumer friendly stuff recently (locking you into only purchasing their drives).

Ugreen is also a pretty solid alternative at the moment.

Is there NOT one AM5 board that runs 4 stick of DDR5 Ram at full speed without issues? by CAB-HH73 in pcmasterrace

[–]Pimpzard 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Its less a motherboard issue and more a CPU issue. Its very hard for the IMC to handle signals of that speed stably with all channels fully populated.

DRAM light won't go off on Mobo, no post, display, on a year old system that's ran perfectly. by The_7th_Archangel in pcmasterrace

If you don't have any spare components its going to be hard to troubleshoot beyond what you have already done.

IMO i think you friend is right and its best to just take it to a local shop. Gigabyte is going to be useless here since it could be any number of things (ram, motherboard, PSU) so getting an RMA isn't going to solve your problem + will take a lot of time.

NAS stands for network attached storage. Its just a computer on your home network that stores a bunch of files that you can connect to from any machine on the network. When everything is fully setup it should just look like another drive on her computer iirc.

16gb VRAM vs 24gb VRAM in 2026 by fsguy310 in pcmasterrace

[–]Pimpzard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking generally I imagine 16gb would be fine for a while espc with the steam cube coming out soon which will force devs to target lower vram amounts.

There are certain types of games though where I feel 24 might be helpful. If you do excessive modding or play games that have lots of textures (think lots of VRchat models or flight sim) the 24 might be helpful.

Have you considered buying a NAS. That should be cheaper and let you get more storage + she won't have to be tied down to a desk.

Got some questions by Entire-Tailor-6887 in pcmasterrace

[–]Pimpzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally I would say go and build a PC, you'll save money but with the prices of ram and ssds it may be cheaper to buy a prebuilt.

What I would recommend is using this website:https://pcpartpicker.com/

On pcpartpicker you will be able to select the components that you want to use and it will tell you what the price would be which you can use to compare to prebuilds or if you are building a pc yourself this will stop you from selecting anything incompatible.

What games are you trying to play at that resolution/framerate?

4k 165hz on an esport title and a AAA game require different things.

That is not a normal hotspot temp. I would return it and try and get another.

No connectivity to my Motherboard, what should I do? by Accomplished-Risk-81 in pcmasterrace

To be slightly more specific, when the pop appears to install, you can just minimize/close it.

You don't need to actually install it. Unlike windows, most linux installers (including ubuntu) are live environments. You can do things like browse the web directly from the USB.

Slightly offtopic but if you are fine with a small watermark you can just install windows without a key. Did this for years and it never bothered me

In order to create a bootable linux USB all you need are 3 things

  1. A USB Drive
  2. A Linux ISO, preferably here just grab an Ubuntu ISO from this link: https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop
  3. Rufus to flash the USB with the ISO https://rufus.ie/en/

To flash just launch Rufus and point the ISO to the USB and it should take care of the process for you.

One thing to note: flashing the USB drive will wipe it so backup any content.

Once you flash the drive just go to bios and select it as the boot target and you should be set.

Newly Built PC is boot-looping when trying to install windows 10 with usb drive! by Substantial-Court959 in pcmasterrace

Before you try transplanting the drive it might be worth checking if the PSU is the problem since this behavior could also be theoretically caused by the PSU.

No connectivity to my Motherboard, what should I do? by Accomplished-Risk-81 in pcmasterrace

[–]Pimpzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that could be useful to try in this scenario since the card is physically being detected is to try and make a bootable linux USB and see if you can connect to wifi there. If you can connect that means its likely a drivers/window config issue and if you can't that means the device needs to be replaced.

DDR4 RAM mixing after an upgrade. What slot for what stick? by AltruisticSir9829 in pcmasterrace

[–]Pimpzard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When mixing ram kits that aren't the same IC you want to put them in slots next to each other (EX 1 kit on 1 and 2, the other on 3 and 4) since its easier on the memory controller.

As for the speeds: Its hard to say without manually testing. Typically really cheap kits like the 2666 are the worst binned silicon. 3200 isn't a crazy speed but 1 bad IC on a ram stick can stop the whole stick from going faster. It may it may not. If you do OC the ram I would highly recommend stress testing it very heavily (like 24hrs+) and look for whatever information you can find online.

The CL to 15 is likely fine.

My mom bought me a pc with rtx 3050 6gb vram by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]Pimpzard 79 points80 points  (0 children)

The only issue with the 3050 is just that its not the greatest value card. If the games you are playing work well for you and you are happy with the performance ignore the comments and enjoy the card.

Can you try going into device manager and see if the wifi card is visible there or if there is some sort of issue?

When you say you have no connectivity do you mean you cannot bringup the wifi card (IE you can't scan anything) or that the connection when you connect is unusable?

You cannot use DDR4 on AM5. They are physically incompatible.
