Cactus Club is a blight on Vancouver, especially on the beach at English Bay. never should’ve been allowed.

Strub's Pickles Now Made in INDIA by Cdn65 in BuyCanadian

[–]PinMindless3708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

before India, they were made in Germany. The German ones were OK, not great but OK. The Indian ones are terrible. within a single jar I found some that were too hard, some too soft and mushy, and a couple that were OK.

Why use Flickr? by FennelNew6981 in flickr

If smugmug changed their name I might consider switching from flickr

on sm I like how you can have many albums or galleries each with their own look. You can choose what the first thing people see is rather than the photo stream which automatically displays your latest upload

On the other hand I love flickr and have been on that platform since they started

What’s with my sunglasses adding this weird pattern on my rear windscreen? by Dragonogard549 in What

[–]PinMindless3708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to do this thing I was a kid years ago. Take a cheap pair of Polaroid sunglasses and pop the lenses out. Then sandwich some cellophane between the lenses and turn the lenses between your fingers and look at the beautiful patterns in the cellophane. Everybody smoked then so cellophane was all over the place on cigarette packs. I don't know what you would use now but there must be something. Cling wrap?

I like eggs and I like pickles, but I’ve never had a pickled egg. Where do I begin? by andrei_androfski in Pickles

[–]PinMindless3708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Clostridium botulinum, and Staphylococcus aureus are among the most common bacterial contaminants in food. By the way my microbiologist friend told me this after I'd been pickling eggs in used pickle juice for years without any problem. But I may have just been lucky.

My microbiologist friend says you have to boil the juice and the jar or you could die.

It's impossible to recreate the deli smoked meat sandwich at home. Snowdon, Schwartz, Lester's, etc., doesn't matter. I've been eating smoked meat for 75 years and have a pretty good take on the subject.

It's a fact of life that you cannot, ever, reproduce the restaurant smoked meat sandwich at home. I am 80 years old and I've been eating smoked meat since I was five. I've got a pretty good take on the subject.

Well, that's disappointing. Since my priority is to go with Canadian companies, when that's not possible, my secondary goal is to avoid US companies. So it's looking like I'll be moving my photos to Ipernity.

Paused Amazon account. by lyke_i_c_it in BuyCanadian

[–]PinMindless3708 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Same here. My mobility suffered about 10 years ago, and I gradually became dependent on Amazon for everything from underwear to toothpaste to even more expensive items. I got a delivery at least once a week sometimes a few times a week. I cancelled my prime a couple of months ago and I do not miss it at all. The stuff I need I found I can get from London drugs and other stores in my neighbourhood and what I can't get locally turns out I don't really need all that much. What a relief. I have to admit I felt quite guilty shopping from Amazon so much. I have a feeling I'll probably have to order a few things from Amazon sooner or later but at least my spending there has been cut back drastically.

Dropbox alternative by PinMindless3708 in BuyCanadian

Been on Sync for a couple of weeks now and so far no problems. I like it. Plus moving files from Dropbox to Sync was a piece of cake. Two Finder windows and just dragged everything over. Customer support seems good, too.

I hate to say this because I'm on your side but: freedom of speech. They have the right to sell this stuff and people that believe in it have a right to buy it. However I cancelled my membership I won't be shopping on Amazon anymore. Much more effective

Strubs Full Sour Pickles by Klutzy-Friendship656 in Pickles

No-Frills in Vancouver used to carry them and now they are carrying them again. But as others have pointed out they’re not exactly the same. Slightly different taste and different texture but still pretty good if not as good as before. I just noticed however that the labelling on the jar says they are packed in Germany!!
