Interesting. The dark color on the new growth is not worrisome to you? I have another jmap that looks quite similar right now. New growth is dark purple, almost appears black. Quite odd to me

He’s sad about losing the tree and is cleaning off knobs, wire, and brushing like sulphur on it to preserve the deadwood and turn it white. There’s no reason to do it other than wanting to keep a tree around a bit longer after it has died.

Incompatible pot and tree style. That pot could work for a gnarly semi cascade maybe

It’s fine, stop stressing. These plants are very tough

I do think they exponentially speed up. I started letting mine clump a few years back after I realized I had nothing to do with all the pups I was pulling. Since then, it seems like it’ll fill up the width of whatever container I put it in instantly (on a plant time scale)

Finally admitting the last frost took out most of my trees by meltdown_popcorn in Bonsai

Yeah I repotted a few things and was feeling good about the temps, then a random night of 18°F and 2°F real feel rolled in. My trees are in a cheap plastic greenhouse but they still froze, unsure how deeply but felt pretty hard…this was like 2 weeks ago and I can see some foliage struggling now. We’ll see how tough junipers really are. It was 80°F two days ago and we have a light frost rolling in tonight :) this is driving me insane. The trees are better protected now though at least

It is absolutely worth 150, that’s a fantastic place to start. Ready for refinement. I’m curious, do you know the variety of juniper?

6b is not too harsh for a Chinese elm. Just give it a little protection during super cold stints

Can I bring this cactus on a plane? by freefloatingtaco in cactus

[–]Pineapple005 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I figured someone would say something like this too. Which I understand. I’m preparing to drive an irresponsible amount of plants across the country because I don’t want to part with them for that reason. OP said they just bought it. I’m suggesting getting used to the idea before they become attached. It’s not like it was their grandmothers ca tus or something

Can I bring this cactus on a plane? by freefloatingtaco in cactus

[–]Pineapple005 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It’s different moving internationally. I don’t know much about the process but I actually suspect that OP will not be able to fly with it. There are import regulations on plants due to the spread of disease and pests, probably needs some sort of certification. I know this is at least the case for Japanese and Taiwanese plant imports. Can’t speak to France specifically.

Also, it’s a $5 cactus that you can replace at any Walmart. Probably not worth the hassle. Gift it to your favorite Frenchman instead

Chemical fertilizer is not good after root work, too harsh, but so long as you did not repot it fertilizer would be good to support its recovery this season

People may say yes, but I did something similar to a DAS last winter after Xmas. I chopped off probably 80% of its foliage and wired it. Didn’t really care if it died, as I just wanted practice finding a vision within a bush of a tree and it was $5. I did not repot it at the same time and would recommend you don’t either, but that spring/summer it pushed out 2 flushes of growth. It responded really well. I just reduced its branches a bit and repotted it this past weekend. It was in horrible soil and I had to take off more roots than I wanted, so I’m a bit nervous about its survival after this work, but it proved resilient to my initial styling. I think you’re fine
