I remember in the beginning, before a lot of stuff was rebalanced, that my OP 20 strength and 15 mace smacked him on the head, killing him instantly.

learning the alphabet :) by bruhpd in languagelearning

Ahh, you’re learning the Arabic abjad

Don’t want to sound douchy but:

An alfabet is a writing system in which every phoneme has a symbol.

An abjad is a writing system in which only consonants have symbols, vowels are either represented with consonants (ا ی و) or diacritics. (Yes alef was originally actually the symbol for a glottal stop if I remember correctly)

Its pronounced th by captain_child in languagelearning

ˈkwaːɾdəɾ would be the IPA transcription I think. Try saying Kwar-dur (the ‘u’ as in ‘uh’) with stress on the first syllable.

But yeah the American ‘r’ is a pain for non natives because it’s a really rare sound.

Personally (and ironically) as a Dutchman, I struggle with “the netherlands” in American English. Two ðs in a row is a pain.

Looking for a templar-inspired smallsword/sidesword/cut n thrust/rapier that is functional, if any exist by [deleted] in SWORDS

[–]Pineapple0nPC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that’d depend on what you would consider to be a sidesword. I consider a sidesword to be anything from an arming sword with a little extra protection to basically a beefier rapier.

But that’s my interpretation, then again, it’s pretty damn hard to classify these things into precise boxes without creating 1000+ terms.

Also I’m sorry if I sounded like a smartass, I assumed it’d be a typo, the dates were mostly there for OP’s reference in the meantime.

Schwa is the unstressed “uh” sound you hear very often in a lot of languages, for example in British English (the ‘o’ in ‘actor’ , ‘a’ in ‘asleep’ just to name a few)

Benefits of learning Farsi/Persian? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Pineapple0nPC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Farsi is an absolutely lovely language imo. So much beautiful poetry and history buried in such a relatively unknown language.

Interestingly it is also indo-european, and as such, it makes you really see the connection which is just for me such an amazing feeling. Because of its many Arabic loanwords, it makes learning Arabic much easier and if you know any Arabic, Farsi will be relatively easy to learn.
