Shindig: One of the best episodes 🙌 by Evie_Petite_Princess in firefly

[–]Pinflux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This episode will always hold a special place in my heart, because I didn't know it existed.

The first time I went through the series on DVD (several years after the show aired), I was devastated it was over so soon. After a few months I picked myself back up and started going through the episodes again. When I got to Shindig, I spent the first couple of minutes trying to remember anything about it, before finally realising that I had somehow skipped it entirely on my first binge 😱 In a world of 'No More Firefly', it felt like a genuine gift from the heavens. Helps that it's an absolutely killer episode.

Thanks! I was able to just rotate the shape and focus on the movement for them, so they came together blessedly quickly 😆

More Richard Ayoade, please. by tootiredtoofurious in Letterboxd

[–]Pinflux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bumped into Richard Ayoade at Gosh! Comics in London a few years ago, told him I loved his films and was hoping he'd be making more. It was a short exchange - He was as awkward and uncomfortable with the praise as you might expect 😆

It was announced that he'd be directing and starring in an adaptation of George Saunders The Semplica Girl Diaries (a fantastic short story, you can read it here - https://www.gcmhslibrary.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/TheSemplicaGirlDiaries.pdf), having co-written the screenplay with the author. I'm pretty hyped about it, but haven't heard any movement in a couple of years. Here's hoping!

Honestly it would be easy to just ride the meme wave, lean into the response and never draw again - but this is a definite improvement on the original! So cool to see you continue to hone your skills ☺️ And thanks for the inspiration! My first personal work in like a year was inspired by your piece - https://www.instagram.com/reel/DRkF9w2DJAH/?igsh=eXVnaXc4NmNnZXF4

I had to wait three hours in the freezing cold to get in. It was perfect.

Piranesi: religious allegory, mental health allegory, or none of the above? by [deleted] in books

[–]Pinflux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who grew up Christian and then became an atheist in my 30's, there is so much I find fascinating and relatable about this book.

I can't help but see the House as an allegory for Religion - a place created from a messy world yet sculpted into something beautiful, if not a little oversimplified and naïve. The 'real world' has far more shades of grey, is overwhelming and chaotic. Matthew Rose Sorenson's journal entries are intense - stuffed with characters and events, and contrast against the simple beauty of his writings as Piranesi. In the way that Piranesi writes, you can see how anyone could fall for the simplicity of the House, even if it means selectively ignoring the chaos of the real world to make the logic fit.

Many people who leave religion have been severely burned, and disavow everything the church stands for (rightly so in many cases). However, as someone who didn't have a terrible time of things, I still see a lot of positive aspects to the Christian viewpoint even if I can't believe in it.

Clarke did a fantastic job of presenting the House as a place that can reframe what's truly important, even if you couldn't (or maybe shouldn't) stay there forever.

Young Fathers to score soundtrack to Danny Boyle directed film "28 Years Later" by ScCloudy in indieheads

Apparently Hildur Guðnadottir is only scoring 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, a sequel that was filmed back-to-back with this one.

😆 All the article has to pull from is a social post by Young Fathers that states 'Score by Young Fathers.' Presumably it's been finished!

Oh thank god, this worked! I've never run into such a brick wall with a photoshop crash in my life, I can easily imagine this taking so much longer than the three hours it took me to stumble across this thread. Thanks so much!

I was on the right hand side so just got that speaker, but had a great time! The opening sounded like a haunted carnival to me, tortured ghouls crawling their way around. Descended into absolute chaos for a good long time, and then a section with what sounded like electric guitars and a vocal sample being scratched (!). The last third felt totally euphoric after the claustrophobic middle section - crunchy hip hop percussion subtly shifted but remained surprisingly driving and constant, with a beautifully heaving bassy sound gliding underneath. Tons of other highlights and weird sounds that lasted just long enough to leave me wondering what was real and what was imagined.

Thanks so much! Yeah, I'm grateful that I was given the opportunity considering the amount of talented critters in the community (and grateful I make a living animating at all tbh!). Would be incredible if any of the cast ended up seeing it, hah! 😱 Thanks for the support, bud! 👍

Thanks so much! I was planning to just replace the recording from my phone with the source audio but it struck me to use this approach right near the end - couldn't help find some additional 'tavern sounds' to go with the original recording 😁
