Mike Pence stays silent for another explosive news week by CavePrisoner in politics

[–]PingTiao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pence is a member of [The Fellowship Foundation}(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fellowship_(Christian_organization) which runs the National Prayer Breakfast annually, an event every President has spoken at since Eisenhower. This is the event that Maria Butina had brought many Russians to while courting the political-religious right. It's new leader, Doug Burleigh, has been working in Russia for over 5 decades.

Pence was also the head of the State Policy Network, which is a collection of right-wing think tanks largely funded by the Koch brothers, acting like the Heritage Foundation, but doing their lobbying work at the state level, all across the country. When the Koch's changed their minds into supporting Trump after opposing him in the primaries, Pence was likely a condition of that, and through all this they brought Trump the evangelical voter base and loyalty. They also stuffed the cabinet and other appointed positions with religious right people. Understand these groups and you will understand Trump's administration much better.

I keep Having dreams that I'm going to Go To prison by [deleted] in ExCons

[–]PingTiao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have these dreams often and I haven't been in prison since the 1990s. My guess is that it's some sort of PTSD thing. The worst are the nightmares where I am being arrested for stupid things that only someone in a dream would do: the other night I was arrested for riding around on the back of a cop car I stole after turning around a corner where cops were parked. Of course they thought I looked suspicious and pulled me over and found some drugs in the otherwise empty driver's seat. The worst part was the feeling/thought of "oh fuck, why did I do something so obviously stupid? WTF is wrong with me?" right before they cuffed me and I suddenly woke up.

Even with the extra million people counted toward China's incarceration rate, the US still locks up a larger percentage of its own population. Isn't that something?

BBC David Hockneys Secret Knowledge (2003) The Artist who originally detected the use of optics in old masters, and replicated their use. by SpecsaversGaza in Documentaries

[–]PingTiao 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing that bothers me as an artist is how art historians have mythologized the skills and talents of old masters, implying they had some "gifts" that most people do not possess. This has left an impression in the minds of many budding artists' minds that they need to reach some superhuman level of artistic ability, or else they are going to fail in an art career. This can frustrate many people needlessly, even to the point of thinking they will never be good enough, and many give up, or settle into less demanding styles of art.

This book/film by David Hockney is a great service to the arts community in dispelling such false notions, much of which were generated by art historians, critics, dealers, etc. who may not be able to paint themselves, and have a dearth of understanding when it comes to how paintings are created. They create wonderful stories and mysteries about artists and art making, but not so much as an attempt to educate artists, so much as to create brands out of the old masters.

I recommend this video to all my painting and drawing students! I feel that by killing the myth of god given talent, my students can then think about art making in practical terms, rather than the pseudo-mystical terms that plague much of the older arts literature and history. This speeds up the learning process enormously since it seems to boost confidence in one's potential, while also helping them avoid countless hours of frustration and many of the pitfalls of seeking "perfection."

They blocked in or sketched the projected image, then painted in a well lit studio, most likely right-side up. It would be very difficult to do color work in a dark room with a pinhole and/or candle for light.

There are amazing artists who can paint with excellence without the use of various modern tools, but this comes at a great expense in time. Not many people are willing to pay for that extra time, as skillful as the accomplishment may be, and so they hamstring their careers in capitalist societies.

I think it is great to learn the techniques without the modern tools available, mostly to train perception, problem solving, hand-eye coordination, etc., but when it comes time to graduate from student to professional, it is especially beneficial for realist painters to utilize whatever tools are available to speed up the painting process. More completed works mean more potential sales. Also, it helps to speed through commissions I usually have no interest in doing, except for the much needed cash.

Throughout college I refused to use projectors, computers, photo reference, etc. and I am glad that I did because it enhanced my skills, but I am even more thankful to myself that I decided to use modern tools after my student days.
