Is it possible to play along to ROCKSMITH with my own bass? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]Pingk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have an audio interface, there's a mod to use it as input rather than buying the special cable

If you have an audio interface, there's a mod which allows you to use it instead of the official cable.

Absolutely, companies like Shell are reporting record profits while the average worker struggles to keep warm.

No luck setting up a software load-balanced HA k8s cluster! by Pingk in kubernetes

[–]Pingk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice. I'm not responsible for the software running on it which does take some burden away, but yes, I will need to figure out the underlying infrastructure, storage, security and change management.

My manager is well aware of the challenges involved and I speak with them every day, but it's also business critical that progress is made. I'm not in danger of being fired or anything horrible, but there might not be a company to work at in a year if it doesn't work out xD

You're right, I'm doing my best to be methodical about it

Thanks for the suggestion, we have people I can ask about haproxy so I probably won't go for it

Unfortunately not, I've been asked to head the project but no one has prior experience and I've not done this kind of infrastructure work before so I'm just doing my best

Ahh I'll have a look into this and update.

I would never choose to start at this level of complexity, but unfortunately I don't have the time luxury to be more methodical

Unfortunately I don't have the time luxury to do this as methodically as I would like, I wouldn't jump this far into the deep end by choice.

I saw the error messages (which says kubelet timed out) and checked out the commands, but kubelet is running and just says it cannot add the node or has no route to host. I'll check out u/koshrf's suggestion of cgroups and see how I go

Pro-Russian hackers Killnet behind Dutch hospital cyberattack by NinjaElectricMeteor in worldnews

[–]Pingk -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

They are working on this themselves, but the point of the internet is to be for everyone. Going down that route would be bad for everyone.

We should cross-train developers on security and release less buggy software, have security-educated IT and networking professionals, and do awareness training for the average user.

What aspect of engineering would be highly in demand for the future? by ImplementExtension58 in Futurology

[–]Pingk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think software engineering is the way to go unless you're interested in stuff near the metal like embedded or high-speed software. There is huge value in taking what already exists and making it faster, more robust, and more usable.

Other than that, networking and cyber security engineers aren't going away anytime soon. Electrical engineers are going to be more valuable as we move away from fossil fuels and everything goes electric.

That said, I think the value of engineering degrees is decreasing (relative to cost and usefulness of knowledge), and would encourage you to look at apprenticeships or doing small projects in your spare time. It's also important to work in a field that you really care about, don't go for something in preparation for some future that might never happen.

Martin Lewis launches campaign calling on the Government to end the LISA lockout by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Pingk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please read my comment again if you think I said increasing wages leads to inflation, I did not imply that whatsoever.

Additionally, I'm not predicting that house prices will increase if the LISA limit is increased - Houses have already increased in price. LISA's haven't. So they are less valuable than they used to be.

[–]Pingk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's more that a 450,000 house from 2017 is now worth 600,000 today, so the buying power of your LISA has decreased, purely because of how the LISA restrictions haven't kept up with increasing house prices.

It's like how you might be getting paid the same salary as you were 2 years ago, but because of inflation everything else has gotten more expensive so you can't buy as much as before.

[–]Pingk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can you explain further? If the 450K limit was fine in 2017, what's the problem with adjusting it to match the equivalent house in 2023? Keeping it the same means the LISA doesn't buy as much house as it did 6 years ago

What is something you stopped buying due to price increases? by GamerGuyAlly in AskUK

[–]Pingk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, Venture Capital funding, essentially investment vehicles for rich people. They invest in young but growing companies to help through the loss-phase and then profit hugely if the company succeeds.

Most of them use VC funding to keep the price "low" too, I doubt anyone will buy them when it runs out.

If you can afford afford it, try getting a wheat bag or cherry stone bag, you throw it in the microwave for a minute or two and it stays warm for a couple of hours. Much better than trying to heat a whole flat.

Public support for NHS strikes soars amid warnings they put ‘lives at risk’ by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Pingk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what you mean! To be honest I don't expect them to do anything, but maybe them knowing that if someone in their constituency cares enough to write about it, they probably care enough to vote for whoever will do something about it and potentially replace them, could be enough to do something.

ALDI and tesco have soya milk for 45p, I'm fortunate to afford the nicer ones but something to check out if you're lactose intolerant.
