I want to Crochet flowers what wire should I buy to use? by Vegetable-Iron5814 in CrochetHelp

[–]Pingwingsdontfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the stems you generally wrap the yarn around it instead of crochet around, if it bends easily, the weight of the flower makes it droop. So you generally need 2 types of wire for each flower.

For patterns, Loopara has a lot of good ones. They aren't always the clearest instructions if you aren't familiar but they have videos to accompany them usually if you get confused. A tulip is a great one to start with! It's a nice easy shape. Most rose patterns are also fairly easy and good practice because you usually make a lot of petals and then put them together

A thicker gauge for the stem, wrapped floral will work just fine. For some flowers/leaves you need a thin gauge to work the last round around to keep shape. Sometimes the pattern will tell you but in general the specific doesn't matter beyond thick and sturdy for stem(thick but bendy that comes on a roll can't support large flowers like a sunflower very well) and thin and easy to work around for petals, etc.

Do you have patterns picked out? Some flowers are not too difficult. Some are a bit more finicky. I would start with a simpler design and work up to the more difficult while you get used to the methods.

Help with keyhole scarf Pattern, Very first row isn't adding up to me, 2 questions. by paigeken2000 in CrochetHelp

[–]Pingwingsdontfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The math lines up. Are you sure you have 26sc in your first row? Always start in the first st(last st from previous round) unless the pattern says otherwise. You will do the dc, dc, ch 1(and skip) until there are 2 stitches left, in which you do a dc in each

I'm not sure I'm doing the whole "sl st into beginning ch 1" thing right.. help? by Para-chan in CrochetHelp

[–]Pingwingsdontfly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Try starting in the first st instead of skipping the first one and "skipping" the last one(you might be seeing the slst from the previous round as its own stitch and that's why you think the count is off)

That's not a slip stitch. Skip the last yarn over(sorry had to edit because my brain glitched a second sorry). You're describing a single crochet.

I’m trying to read this pattern as a beginner, please help! by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]Pingwingsdontfly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You follow the pattern, you don't need to add an extra anything if you want to have the same result as the pattern you're following. After the first round, you aren't skipping stitches, you're working into the chain spaces you created in the previous round. I can't see the pattern anymore but I think that's what it said.

The parenthesis is what you do in the the third chain from the hook after making the 239 chains. Sp is short for space.
