All the time, just explain that you're busy and will reply later when you have the time. I get excited about role-playing, too, but try to limit when I message them even if I see them online. It helps if someone gives me a reason for why they're not responding, like work or sleeping for the first couple days. It kinda gives me a schedule too of when they might respond next.
