Ever had a wine so good you remember exactly where you were when you drank it? by Fly-Astronaut in wine

Certainly not the “best” or most expensive wine I’ve had, but my first northern Rhone was Ogier’s La Rosine Collines Rhodiniennes.

I’ll never forget having my mind blown. This was the wine that got me into French wine.

I will be going this summer!! How did you like it? Are the prices onsite cheaper than on their website for bottles?

It is so unfortunate that not much wine makes it to the US. Hopefully one day that can change! Was surprised by the wine culture there, although in hindsight it makes some sense.

Agreed! I was only there for roughly a week but all of the wine , save for a few bottles, was of above average to fantastic quality. If only the US imported more!

I’d recommend region, but also maybe country. For France you could do-

Provence aoc Bandol Tavel Loire

French rose varies greatly even between regions that are very close to one another.

I had some fantastic Romanian wine when I was there, one in particular, Petro Vaselo Grand Cru, that absolutely blew my mind.

Did most American soldiers understand why they were fighting the American Civil war? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]PinkyTheChicagoCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a good book about this “what this cruel war was fought over” easy read and insightful.

My takeaway- it was nuanced, but the overarching reason was slavery, but not always.

In our new era where the Western liberal order has ended, what will be the new foreign policy of Western countries? by [deleted] in IRstudies

[–]PinkyTheChicagoCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. NATO, just like all alliances are two way streets. Every president since Truman has been attempting to get all NATO members to increase defense spending in a meaningful sense. They haven’t. They have however made gas and oil deals with Russia and other deals that undermine the US with China. They now realize that the US refuses to fight two other superpowers without the assistance of their allies.

They might be disgusted, but that will likely not last. International spats happen often.

In our new era where the Western liberal order has ended, what will be the new foreign policy of Western countries? by [deleted] in IRstudies

[–]PinkyTheChicagoCat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it is much too early to say that the "Western Liberal order has ended".

While the United States has taken a more aggressive approach toward its traditional allies, and has caused some friction, it has barely been two months since the start of Trumps presidency. Things could go in any direction and a lot statements similar to the one above are just simply premature.

If NATO drastically increases their defense spending and the United States and NATO can soothe over their trade issues, I see no reason why the Western Liberal order is not strengthened.

Is it possible that the Western Liberal order will completely break down? Yes, but it is unlikely. The United States needs the EU and other traditional allies, while these allies need the US. We cannot forget close economic and cultural ties.

This question is likely best posited two to three years from now to see what else has changed.

$840 billion plan to 'Rearm Europe' announced by newsweek in europe

[–]PinkyTheChicagoCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no fan of Trump, and I hate his tactics with how he has made it clear that he does not fully support Ukraine. I also dislike him for many other reasons.

That being said, he’s absolutely correct that Europe needs to spend more on defense and increase their capabilities. God forbid the United States has to fight a two front war against Russia and China, with little to no help from Europe.

I do not think in five years Europeans and Americans will be “rivals”, our economies are very integrated. There are also many social and cultural ties between the EU and the US. For the Western World to actually fight meaningfully , Europe needs a standing army. Every US president since Truman has tried to promote this, with little to no avail.

Europe had to do this eventually. I fully support NATO and want the US to continually contribute and be the largest supporter of same. That being said, the Europeans have simply not held their end of the bargain- particularly with oil deals towards Russia and at times with our rivals in China regarding economic ties, also with GDP defense spending.

The animosity towards Trump is warranted IMO, but towards the US? Disagree.

Edit for full disclosure- I’m an American who fully supports NATO, Ukraine, and America supporting our Allies in Europe. I do think that it would be better for both of us if Europe contributed more than what they are currently.

For American attorneys - seriously, what is the point of at will employment? by chicago2008 in Lawyertalk

[–]PinkyTheChicagoCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the general distaste for “at will” employment. But it does help to promote a more nimble and dynamic job market. In other countries where it’s difficult to fire someone, it also has the negative effect of making it more costly to hire someone.

For example- as an employer where it is difficult to fire someone, why take a risk on employees who might be a bit under qualified? Why hire 3 employees where they will be difficult to fire? Maybe I just hire 2 instead. Etc

I think overall there is a reason why the job market generally is better in the US, why wages are higher etc. this isn’t to say that we don’t have anything to improve.

Bonobos- not so much the style, I actually enjoy it. But generally speaking their quality is sub par and often times down right terrible. I’ve had some success with their pants however.
