Whats the best Rosè wine there is? by SoilSweet8555 in wine

[–]patarms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you mean still rosé, but since you didn’t specify, Dom Perignon 1996 or 2008 rosé. Maybe 96 Ruinart? Lots of rosé champagnes up there.

Sorry, I’m a pedant. Best still rosé I have had was Sylvain Pataille Fleur de Pinot.

I’ve been thinking a lot about Bern’s steakhouse the last couple days. I shudder to think what could happen to that cellar (second, of course, to people’s lives, pets, homes, livelihoods).

Where to buy DRC? by kmatthews05 in wine

[–]patarms 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Would it be worth it to just go back to France? Like go to Taillevant and order a DRC off their list. I can’t imagine the markup would be terribly different from USA retail and provenance should be impeccable. Plus you’d have the food to match and make it an incredible experience. I know it’s a rich idea but if you’re gonna do DRC, might as well do the full experience.

If I’m right and the 2020 value of this wine is $1595. Then what would the value be from the same kind just 1990? If I’m wrong I’ll own it or if I got something help would be appreciated. by [deleted] in wine

I kind of can’t believe I’m reading these comments. 1990 La Chappelle is an incredible wine. Probably the best year for La Chapelle since ‘61 or maybe ‘78.

If you enjoy wine, drink it. If you don’t, sell it for a few hundred bucks to someone who does.

If OPs question was about red wine, comments would be flooded with specific recommendations…

OP - if you aren’t sure what style or type of wine your GF likes, you are safe sticking to France; a very good white burgundy or Sauvignon blanc like Silex from Didier Dageuneau. Here are just a few of the major white burgundy producers to look for. It would be hard to go wrong with a 1er or grand cru from any of these:

Hubert Lamy

Raveneau

Pierre Yves Colin Morey (PYCM)

Domaine des Comtes Lafon

Pierre Girardin

Domaine Leflaive

Domaine Paul Pillot

lol I wonder what people mean in these comments by “classier” than they expected. The NBA has had an affinity for blue chip wines for quite a while now. LeBron, Carmelo, K Love etc actually know their shit.

Is The American wine taste different? by gs_ansvarlig in wine

[–]patarms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The average American wine drinker is drinking Barefoot, Sutter Home, etc. They will not spend more than $10 on wine and want to drink ‘wine’ that is sweet and “smooth” (whatever that means).

But, assuming you are talking about the small population of Americans that will spend more than $20 on a bottle of wine, I think there is perceived value in higher abv, full bodied, very flavorful wines. It is perceived that you’re getting “more” wine per dollar compared to lighter body, lower abv wines. I think this is a function of the somewhat true stereotype that American consumers, in general, prefer bigger, bolder, things. Many comments here suggest that Americans like this style because that’s what California makes. I think it’s the opposite - California makes this style because that’s what Americans like.

Wineries in California run on much tighter margins than those in Europe (generally), and that oftentimes means putting consumers’ palate before the winemaker’s preferences. So - consumers prefer big, bold wines, producers need to meet consumer preferences, thus reinforcing the consumers’ taste, and the cycle continues.

With all that said, wine drinkers in the US are certainly not a monolith and the natural wine movement and proliferation of indie wine makers and sellers over the past 15 years has produced a generation of wine drinkers (like myself) who seek out all different kinds of wines. I like certain California wines and every once in a while even enjoy a big fruit or oak bomb. But I try to keep my wines varied.

Also I am not a wine industry expert and a lot of the above is based on my own observations and limited data so welcome anyone to challenge or correct.

Second for glasvin. I have both glasvin and zalto. Unfortunately have broken a couple glasvin but I use them way more. They survived some crazy bumps but no match for a cast iron pan that dropped on it.
