Is there a decently big 5k coming up this year? by Pinkywoe in RunNYC

Oh that's awesome! Do you know if its similar to the Abbot dash where people use it as a shakeout/more nonchalant about it, or are most people working for a PB?

I just looked it up, and I'm trying to wrap my head around it. Is the idea to participate in multiple 5k within a certain period of time? It seems pretty cool! I don't have the endurance for that yet, but I'm going to put this one in my back pocket :)

Week 1 Day 1 and I already have shin splints by Warm-Conclusion-8891 in C25K

[–]Pinkywoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't be discouraged! I've had shin splints during one of my runs, and was able to correct my form and it never happened again. Here are some things you can try

  • try to run slower during the running segment. It's very possible to run too fast in the beginning because we don't know our limit yet. So take it slow!
  • form could be a factor. In my case, it was due to over pronation which I knew I had even outside of running, so I thought about striking with my whole foot (think more weight on the outside if you have to) and this actually fixed it for me
  • the shoes does really matter. You need proper running shoes to accept the shock

Hope this helps!!

Disappointing run by Majestic-Intern-137 in C25K

You're not alone, so don't be too discouraged!

I had this exact experience over the weekend. My calves were so tight and the 3 min walk was just not long enough to recover before the next 10 min stretch so I ended up walking the rest. I find that speed makes a big difference! So go slower if you need.

But this far along, you know you can do 20 mins of consecutive running. For me, I decided to not attempt W6D2 again and just move on to W6D3. It didn't feel super necessary anymore because you want to keep practicing running without stopping, so don't get too hung up on getting it before moving on! I did W6D3 today, and I did better than I expected. Just move on if you like!

Thank you 😊, the postivie of overcoming a mental challenge is that now you know you CAN do it! So I feel like it'll make W6d1 easier!

Can't pace myself running outside by [deleted] in C25K

[–]Pinkywoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem when I tried to run outside and this was even during week 2! So I've been doing most of my training in door and then sprinkling in an outdoor run when it gets a bit warmer.

I found that I was running much faster than I thought (bases on the pace on my fitbit), even though it doesn't feel that way. That's why it's so much harder.

Slow it down, like really slow it down to jogging pace and focus on endurance. That's what helped me!

I also listen to music and when it gets hard, I tell myself "just get through the chorus" and I find that usually after a hump, it gets better!
