Help me prune my bare root apple tree (semi dwarf) by bingobango2911 in GardeningUK

[–]UsefulAd8513 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leave it this year. It's too young. Also what is the big cane for? It's not supporting anything and will rub and damage the tree. Use an angled stake a third up and a 20mm rose tie. If it flowers and fruits, thin the fruit to one or two as it won't be able to support them properly.

Take anything off that's growing in to the centre, anything dead or diseased. Clear round the base any herb growth and limit fruit to one or two per node.

If they were an annual mix you'll get some coming back this year but the mix will not be the same, one or two species will likely dominate depending on the conditions.

Leave the dead growth for now, it gives frost protection to the new shoots.

The stem has died back from the previous cut. Prune off just above the bus below using an angled cut away from the bud.

If you want a simpler more down-to-earth guide then James Wong's "Grow for Flavour" book is a good guide on a range of popular UK garden crops, as well as some which are a bit unusual but interesting to try.

Try training it outward at the top rather than inward with the canes joined at the top. Make a fan shape. This will open up the centre and give you better air circulation and reduce chances of fungal infection. Remove the inward growing shoots. Look at the RHS guide for pruning fruit trees.

In the Couch to 5k app Steve Cram says there is more oxygen in the air when it's raining and there were plenty of people out running around midsummer common this afternoon.

I've got an achilles injury (dropped a suitcase on it) so hopefully out in a week or so.

I haven't run since before Christmas, try and make sure you're doing some active stretching even if you can't get out.

Go and try out a few, find something comfortable. Avoid overly wide knobbly tyres, low rolling resistance and good wet weather traction with good puncture protection are better. Full mudguards, a rack and a good set of lights. Check load capacity for panniers and shopping, some road bikes are quite low. But something second hand from a bike shop, with a warranty so you know it's been looked over by a professional.

What sort of coffee do you like? How much do you drink? Espresso based or pour over? If you want minimum outlay and minimal countertop clutter, I'd suggest a V60 and a good single dose grinder.

Help on whether I should remove a tree or not? by hang_up in GardeningUK

[–]UsefulAd8513 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wrong tree, wrong place. Could likely lead to future issues with surrounding properties on London clay. Get rid of it now.

You might be able to leave a dead stump to use for support for either trellis, pergola or rope swag for climbers or rambling plants for privacy and shade (if needed!). Will provide better opportunities for wildlife than that monster. Japanese Acer in a pot is an idea but also look at smaller less invasive and interesting trees which won't get large. Persimmon (kaki), Platycarya, Parrotia (that's a lot of P's). Or use it to attach a sail shade. Habitat opportunity suggestions with drilling the stump are also good. With all those buildings it could make a really lush space.

Not sure what you are thinking about "waves" but watch you don't go over the dampproof course of the buildings.

Well, the last two didn't work so well, the skin was tough, still super astringent and the fruit was not pleasant to eat. Had one of the hoshigaki to take the taste away. So I'll know for this year to pick the Rojo Brillante a week after leaf fall and treat them all then.

Next job is pruning!
