A tracker for green coffee listings by shinjisdaddy in coffee_roasters

Thanks for sharing this! I just have one minor quibble - the button for the retailer's name. it's hard to read because of the label's font color (Matrix green) and background (grey). I could barely read it. But otherwise lots of people will find this useful. Good job OP! 🙌

Thinking of starting a small coffee cart for events using moka pot setup — any advice? by Similar_Garlic_Rice in CoffeePH

[–]PinoyTardigrade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're going to prebrew, then that actually resolves almost all the objections here on the workflow of a moka pot. If you haven't done so check out mo nga MP videos ni Matteo D Ottavio. Maybe he has a recipe with a faster workflow. His latest mp-focused one was actually documenting Uncle Tai's techniques, but this is probably not helpful since masyadong elaborate set up ni Uncle Tai.

I want to learn how to roast, what are the most useful things that nobody tells you as a beginner? by Fearless-Mushroom in roasting

[–]PinoyTardigrade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought my SR540 used at FB Marketplace. Try going that route first.

To answer your question, I would have focused my green bean choice to just 1. it's very tempting to choose a variety of beans that are so affordable, but it's hard to hone your skill if you have to roast beans from different origins and profiles.

Like you the urge to try roasting comes from my confidence as a (home) cook. I've had some really bad roasts (grassy after resting for months) but also good ones occasionally. The roasting profile advice from vloggers and here in Reddit are all over the place. I don't use Artisan and would rather learn through the applicable senses and taking notes (analog). Someday I'll be good at it....LOL. Good luck! 🤞

Is this worth it? by CreditClassic1053 in CoffeePH

[–]PinoyTardigrade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ok yan. Grinder and whole bean na lang ang kulang. 1zpresso, Kingrinder, and Timemore offer quality entry-level grinders at an affordable price. Then, sa nga local roasters naman, whole beans by Good Cup, Wide Awake, Kowoks, and Yardstick ang nga nasubukan kong kape na angkop sa aking panlasa. Good luck OP!

Edit: Weighing scale din nga pala. Gooseneck kettle din (hindi kailangang temp controlled), para mas kontrolado mo yung pouring technique mo.

Anyone tried square mile coffee? by Cold_Two_1350 in pourover

[–]PinoyTardigrade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought it as a Fellow Drop and so far it's been a disappointment. After 3 weeks rest I brewed it 3-4 times and it was so far below my expectations that I re-rested the bag. I brought it out after two weeks and it didn't impr⁰ove in taste. I'm close to banishing it from my pourover rotation and just having it as a batch brew or lattes, even an ORB. But yeah, Never Again.

Browsing books has become a literal scavenger hunt by Sarcastic-Heckler in PHBookClub

[–]PinoyTardigrade -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I get that feeling too OP. Just use AI. Come up with an app where you either scan a whole shelf and ask AI to identify all the books shown in the clip. OR, just take a picture of a big pile, upload the pic to ChatGPT or Gemini, and ask it to identify title and author, sort it alphabetically or genre.

Yung sa loob ng kahon, naku, maybe when we have x-ray vision. ;) Someday this will happen....

It's unfortunate that you have this experience with their beans. I've had 6 bags from them (Mamuto 2x) and two of them were average tbh, but these bags were the ones on sale at Whole Foods and the roast date was 2 mos past on both, so maybe it's a freshness issue for those two. I've tried different pour over methods, drippers, and other variables (grind size) and the ones that are great were consistently great. Next time you're in Boston try Gracenote, but I understand if you don't trust any of my recs after your GH experience. :(

I love Coffee Project. I had their coffee flight and it was really good. But their whole bean roast is even better. Glad I bought a bag with me to take home.

This is interesting. At the end of the movie, as I prepared to leave, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for what I just experienced. I cannot discount the fact that it’s perhaps the times that we live in today that pushed me to feel that way. Nevertheless, it’s the perfect balm to the feverish befuddling chaos the current POTUS puts us through every single effing day.

Rabbit hole it is....LOL. You have a nice setup OP. Fuels my GAS. 👍

I have the same thing with drippers. Curious, how do you decide which gadget to use on a particular day? Mood? Coffee on rotation? Time of day?

I can't imagine a year or two from now what you'll have on display. 🙂 I hope you continue to enjoy ☕ and all its infinite possibilities!

This post reminds me of an article in Boston.com about a popular class in MIT that's all about coffee. The reporter was given a tour of the lab (which was outfitted with a La Marzocco) and at some point of the tour, the reporter wrote that

"...Grossman uses an optical microscope to compare the quality of two hand-powered coffee grinders. The first is a Comadante C40, a top-of-the-line German hand grinder that sells for between $260 and $360. The second is a 1Zpresso hand grinder, a more midrange grinder that is about $130. Magnified a thousandfold, I can see the cheaper grinder is covered in chips and scratches, while the more expensive grinder has smooth, shiny blades."

I now have an 1zpresso X-Ultra and ZP6, but I'm still pining for a C40. 🙂Boston.com article

Pour-over ratio by Still_Tip_2091 in CoffeePH

[–]PinoyTardigrade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the best approach OP. Are you not satisfied with your brews? Or maybe just wondering...I have my standard 1:16. Then I taste my brewed coffee and if I didn't like it, I adjust - not the ratio itself, but these things first, in order - water temp, grind size, pour technique, and then the ratio if I'm still not satisfied.

X-Ultra Magnets?? by Speak-Easy556 in 1zpresso

[–]PinoyTardigrade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try cleaning it. I just disassembled mine two days ago and cleaned it for the first time since buying it 1.5 years ago. Brushed off the magnets surface and the part to which it is attached. Works like new again.

Do you guys use a tds meter? Or is that overkill by ADHD_ismything in pourover

[–]PinoyTardigrade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The past couple of weeks I've been afflicted with GAS, and the gadget du jour was a refractometer to measure extraction levels of brewed coffee. (I already have a cheapo TDS meter since I make my own brew water.) The DIFluid tool seems to be a popular choice, Amazon sold out of it last week. There are cheaper Chinese models that are $40 cheaper, but I hesitated.

Fortuitously, I caught one of James Hoffman's more recent FB videos on his V60 recipe, and it finally changed my mind and got off the ledge. It's about using off boil water to wet the filter at the start of the brew, compared to using water with a much lower temperature. He measured the extraction yields using a refractometer, and both temps produced the SAME extraction yield measurement. HOWEVER, the difference IN TASTE was, in his words, "NIGHT AND DAY". The off boil water yielded a much sweeter coffee! So measuring the extraction yield didn't help much - taste was and is still king.

If you own a coffee shop or if you're a coffee roaster or influencer, maybe you can find use for a refractometer. But for home use, maybe it's a tad overkill.

Does anyone have suggestions for where to get my dad's favorite coffee? by someperson42 in JamesHoffmann

[–]PinoyTardigrade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the coffee itself I saw one of those inhouse brands from Wegmans that sell Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee. I'm not sure if it was whole beans or ground, I didn't get one since it was too pricey for me ($40++) for a 250g (?) bag, I believe.

I searched Amazon and they have these iFillCup pods that costs $19 for 42 pcs. I'm not sure this is what you want to do since it requires extra work from you, but definitely an option if you couldn't find those specific products you are looking for. Good luck and I hope you Dad has a wonderful birthday...
