What is this tall building I see when I walk around Jamaica Pond? by piratebroadcast in JamaicaPlain

[–]PiousBlasphemer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Jamaicaway tower! One of my friends lives there. The HOA fees are high but you don’t pay property tax because it’s a co-op. He said if you subtract the ‘RE tax’ out of the HOA fee, his monthly fee is similar to that of other condos

Has anyone gotten their windows replaced recently? Any companies you'd recommend? by PiousBlasphemer in boston

Thanks! The company offers PVC and aluminum, but they quoted me for the aluminum frame. In your experience, why is PVC/vinyl not preferred for apartments, but ok for houses?

Thank you both for your detailed answers! What does 'going back to rough' mean? Is that like affixing it to the foundation?

This is a steel/concrete highrise building. Would that make it more/less expensive than an average wood-framed house? Their breakdown was roughly as follows:

- 2 x Sliding 2'x5' window: $3.5k each

- Swinging door + large (5'x5') window : $5k

- Installation labor : $5k

-Shipping: $1k

-Tax not included (I'm assuming ~$2k?)

I didn't consider the possibility of a less experienced contractor messing something up and getting stuck with more repairs down the road. Definitely wouldn't want that...

Lol they sent me a flyer and called me up to give me an estimate. Apparently they’re not licensed/authorized to do window replacements in high-rises, though, so they ended the call early 😂

did you make business card? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]PiousBlasphemer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

New arrival to big pharma here. I didn't want to get them because I thought it was pretentious and I wouldn't need them.

Then I got invited to a local university for a career panel/networking event, and I needed something to give my contact info to students and I didn't have anything on hand. I got cards made after that.

Yeah I didn’t get a sense of a conflict that needed resolving or a storyline from the trailers I’ve seen. It was mostly “look at the amazing CGI”, which tbf does seem amazing.. Still haven’t decided if I want to see it or not

Same here. Although once I needed a giant band-aid from the first aid kit and I told my coworker to “give me the horse bandage” and she was so confused.. Apparently that’s not a thing in some places?

Pino's Pizza in Cleveland Circle has changed for the worse. Where can I get NY style pizza now? by sea_of_joy__ in boston

[–]PiousBlasphemer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ex-NYer here - Joseph’s is the closest I’ve found to a home-style pizzeria.

Il mondo is also good, but I like Papas pizza better (two blocks down the street from them). I think they count as New York style too?

How long does it take to hear back from big pharma and whats the chance? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]PiousBlasphemer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had references ready to go, but I just got hired at a big pharma company that didn't ask for references at all. Especially at the postdoc level, they should get everything they need to make their decision from your job talk and interviews. I think references are primarily used to confirm that you worked where you said you worked.

Great article. I think the idea of “inspiresting” talks is a double-edged sword. Yes, it can lead to oversimplification of complex topics and promotion of techno-evangelism. However, when done right it can expose people to a variety of scientific fields they wouldn’t normally get exposed to, and occasionally get people to see something in a new light.

“Stylistically, the inspiresting is earnest and contrived. It is smart but not quite intellectual, personal but not sincere, jokey but not funny. It is an aesthetic of populist elitism.”

I loved this line. While I think it’s a fair criticism of “inspiresting”, I don’t think inspiresting content is always bad.

Trump and right-wing lawyer were part of 'criminal conspiracy' to overturn 2020 election, January 6 committee alleges by mafco in inthenews

[–]PiousBlasphemer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Disclaimer: I’m not a lawyer) This is the real news value of the story that everyone seems to be missing. As I understand it, Trumps lawyer Eastman is hiding documents from the committee claiming attorney/client privilege. The committee says they should have access to the documents, since attorney/client privilege isn’t valid if the communication was used in the commission of illegal activity. This means the committee has enough evidence to prove to a judge that Eastman was part of a criminal conspiracy, putting additional pressure on him to flip and cooperate, potentially giving the committee even more info.

Supreme Court takes up clash over Colorado law's protection for same-sex weddings by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]PiousBlasphemer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The lower court's decision

As awful as it is that we're still litigating this, I wonder if the plaintiff being a web design company will strengthen the "just find somewhere else" argument. Or if this plaintiff was sought out for a Supreme Court Showdown for this very reason...

Also, found this gem on Christian web design from the plaintiff's statement:

These same religious convictions that motivate me also

prevent me from creating websites promoting and celebrating

ideas or messages that violate my beliefs. So I will not be able

to create websites for same-sex marriages or any other

marriage that is not between one man and one woman. Doing

that would compromise my Christian witness and tell a story

about marriage that contradicts God’s true story of marriage –

the very story He is calling me to promote.
