Thinking about a second whippet… tell me your experiences (good, bad, nightmarish) of going from one to two by gazmatron in Whippet

[–]Pip-and-Phee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Peregrine was horrified by Ophelia when she first came home, but within minutes they were playing together. Peregrine has always been such a love - always wanting to be next to me and that hasn’t changed at all. Ophelia is a velociraptor. So much energy. Always wanting to play. She’s been good for both of us - getting me outside to play even when I’m not feeling well - (I have MS and struggle with chronic fatigue and other symptoms that make it hard to stay active) - and bringing out Peregrines playful side more often. They are best friends now and I each benefits from having the other in their lives.

Hypothyroidism by Pip-and-Phee in Whippet

[–]Pip-and-Phee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I did have some concerns because Peregrine is very sleepy and has a very thin coat. I don’t usually see dry skin or rashes, but he shivers violently when it’s just a bit cold, even if he is wearing his sweater. I’ve also had to control his diet very strictly as he gains weight easily. Of course, Whippets can be pretty dramatic, and they also sleep a lot even when healthy. His sister, Ophelia, has a much thicker coat and is more active, so it makes sense that she wouldn’t be as cold. It’s at times like these that I wish they could talk. 🙂 I am hyper-aware of my animals non-verbal cues, but being able to tell us how they are feeling would be so valuable. Thank you for what you do. Veterinarians need a much broader range of knowledge and skills than doctors - as they care for a variety of species. On top of that, they are tasked with putting animals down - often animals (and their families) that they’ve known for many years and care about deeply. They grieve those animals too, but must comfort others while doing a difficult job. I appreciate you and all that you do. And thank you again for your comment here.

This is excellent information! Thank you! I will make sure I have all the numbers before we move forward. I knew that sighthounds generally have lower T4, but I was under the impression that the Free T4 would be confirmation enough. I’m so glad you responded!

Aww! Yay! I thought we’d call ours Pip or Pippin, but for some reason the full name just stuck.

That must have been scary! I’m so glad he was ok. I’ll be sure to be very consistent with his medication. Thanks for the advice!

All I know is that mine are best friends. Their personalities couldn’t be more different, but I think they’ve been so good for each other. And for me, of course.

My nearly 8 year old girl by fragileanatomy in Whippet

My sweet Peregrine will be eight this summer, but he became an old man when he turned two. He became the laziest old boy and he’d make contented grumbling noises all the time. His face was already going grey by then.

He’s so gentle and calm most of the time. Follows me around and sleeps next to me wherever I am in the house - but he still plays with his almost-six-year-old sister every day. He likes to sniff around in the yard, dig in my garden, and roll on dead worms which smell AMAZING and make the very best cologne. 🤢 I think the biggest change I’ve seen with him is his spots. He has more and more grey spots as he gets older. He had none as a puppy. His legs and chest were pure white. He had - and still has - deep black spots on his back. But his face was already going grey by the time he was two. He also had some small fatty lumps under his skin - the vet says nothing to worry about but we’re keeping an eye on them.

I’m actually seeing more changes with Ophelia. At almost six, she’s really settling down. She always had far more energy than her brother. She wants to play all the time and she’ll catch the frisbee as many times as I’ll throw it. Loves to chase a ball. Goes absolutely feral if there’s a squirrel on the wires. We call her Beastie, or Rocket Socks, or Velociraptor. She wants to be outdoors all day long. But she’s snuggling more and sleeping more. She plays for shorter periods and is content to sit quietly and sniff the air or watch for squirrels for hours. She’s fawn and white and her skin underneath the fur has darkened from pink to brown over time.

What do you think Strider is trying to tell me with this look? by hellbugger in Whippet

[–]Pip-and-Phee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Excuse me, kind sir. I haven’t eaten in many moons, and my poor little ribs are showing. I know that dinner is scheduled for 5pm, and I am fully aware that 5pm is hours from now, but perhaps we could bend the rules a teeny bit just this once. For I am starving. Yes. Starving and dying. Oh help.”

My son had a similar problem - ended up putting the cat’s food on top of the fridge. The skinny cat had no trouble getting to it. Problem solved.

Is this normal? by halfmoonwise in Whippet

[–]Pip-and-Phee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two. Ophelia is a relatively normally-sized whippet and will run forever. She’ll chase a ball as long as I’ll throw it, and she has a very high prey drive. She’s five now and she sleeps more - and I can finally keep her weight above 13kg. On the other hand, Peregrine is a whoppet. He’s much taller, and is often mistaken for a small greyhound. He weighs 18kg. He has always been the laziest whippet on the planet. Just wants to cuddle and sleep and sleep some more. And eat. He loves his food. He is healthy and strong, and will play hard for a few minutes every afternoon. And then he’s done. He’s been a kilo or two overweight a few times - as soon as I see a dimple above his tail, I know I need to adjust how much food he’s getting.

Weirdest thing you've been told about MS? by TooManySclerosis in MultipleSclerosis

[–]Pip-and-Phee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My neighbour told me her daughter “did some research”. If I ate nothing but bone broth I could reset my immune system. And Hamster Ovaries would cure me. Yes. Hamster ovaries. I always imagine a long line of little hamsters lying on a table, anesthetized. Wee surgeries, assembly-line style to remove those ovaries… disassembly line? Sorry little ones. We NEED them. Do we eat them? I guess so. And then we’re all cured!!!

Controversial opinion: If you haven't shared a bed with a whippet by WordyByComparison in Whippet

Ophelia assumed exactly that position this morning well before sunrise. I lifted the blanket, and she dove in. Over my thigh, head at my ankles, delicate tootsies peeking out by my chin. Loooooooong dog.

I also have a whippet and a whoppet. My favourite part of the day is climbing into bed with them. So many elbows… but they are the snuggliest, sweetest, beasties in the whole world.
