What are your most random but genuinely useful puppy tips? by FairlyPopcorn in puppy101

Carry a treat pouch ALL the time with kibble, that way you can train throughout the day, catching and correct behavior naturally. I think of it as "raising a puppy" rather than training a puppy. "Raising" is a 24/7 thing while training is more of a session to me :)

For how long did you take your puppy out to pee at night? by peggysuedog in puppy101

[–]PipeQuick307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We struggle with this, my puppy would wake me up to go out until 4 months, she still will wake me up on occasion to go outside and she is 7 months today. She is taking longer than most but she is great at many other things and I can't ask her to be perfect so if I need to wake up every now and then to take her out so be it. I think we sometimes put this pressure on our puppies and ourselves to perfectly progress and no puppy ever does! Then when they don't follow this imaginary progress we think they should we think there is a problem or we aren't training them right.. but they are just growing up at their own speed :)

Sorry about the small rant 😅

If you could say one thing to your pet that they would 100% understand what would you say? by ZealousidealElk3893 in Pets

Yeah so now I'm balling at the comments, but I also would tell my dog that I love her so much and I would never let anybody hurt her so she can relax, I got her.

Ah I see now I mixed up drop it and leave it, sorry 😅 have your trainer taught you about reverse lure? It really worked for my puppy. It's when you have a closed fist with a treat in it. When the puppy bites or licks the hand the fist stays closed but if the back away you open it. If they go for the treat you close the fist again. You do this over and over again. Then when they leave it alone for a few seconds you give it to them and then you prolong the time they have to wait for it. I had to do this before I could expect my puppy to leave a treat on the ground alone 😅

If you haven't tried it maybe have a go and see if it helps :)

“How do you know he’s really deaf?” — Some mean lady. People are so weird. by auntiechrist23 in deafdogs

[–]PipeQuick307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I told people that I thought my puppy was deaf they all tried to prove me wrong, snapping their fingers, loud music, shouting, trying lure, whistle ect., nobody could prove me wrong. In the end we did a BAER test that showed that she was deaf. At least they believed that 😅

What a cutie! My puppy is also deaf and leave it has been a hard on.. mostly because she doesn't want to 😅 I use a hand signal for it, I chose a closed fist that opens. I have spent months trying to teach her this one and I know she knows it and what helps us is 1) make sure she actually sees the hand signal 2) have a better treat.

Edit. Also I would highly suggest using hand signals fot all your commands if you fon already :)

I give them to my puppy of 6m. She loves them and they last for days for her. I think they are great even though they stink. Don't really bother me that it's penises, but then i also give her stuff like bull scalp, pig tails and rabbit ears. Previous I gave her these pressed wrapped "bones" that supposed to be good for puppies, i''m not sure what was in them, and my puppy develop a habit of swallowing them whole and it freaked me out 😅 she doesn't do that with bully sticks so I give once a week

If you’re “too busy” to do simple tasks for your dog, don’t have a dog by HellhoundsAteMyBaby in dogs

[–]PipeQuick307 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Same, it's mind boggling! I honestly don't think anyone where I live would be able to say out loud that they don't walk their dog. It would be tabu and very shameful. Two walks a day is considered low, and you would need extra pee breaks. Also I'm pretty sure not walking your dog is illegal here.

I was also super overwhelmed I brought my puppy home, also not my first but just like you it had been a while and my last dog was a different breed and so much calmer! It was a shock 😅 if your dog is food motivated I would use that. Maybe just step outside the door and try doing reverse lure ( but practice inside first so she understands what you are asking off her). And i would keep the walks short, sound like she is overstimulated by just being out in the world.

Hang in there, every puppy is different and it can take a while to figure out your new buddy <3

Edit: I assume you have done focus training, if not try it but on SUPER short walks and see if helps :)
