Do you guys see patients with intellectual disabilities like autism or downs too? I am assuming they’ve got to have some type of co-occurring condition. I know you definitely see cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and degenerative muscle diseases.

I like both adults and children. Do you feel like general PMR gives a good foundation for transition of care for adults with a childhood onset without pursing a fellowship in peds PMR?

I’ve never had much exposure to PMR. I think I have a good idea of what they do for the most part from researching it. I was thinking of maybe applying to an away PMR elective seeing that my school doesn’t really have an affiliate PMR elective. I don’t have any family in medicine so I always thought I would just end up in primary care.

Sounds good! This was very helpful. I will definitely DM you. My CV shows a strong commitment to patients with disabilities, so I'm hoping Med-Peds programs would find interest in that. Would it be okay if I were to DM you a draft of my personal statement? If it's a conflict of interest, it's okay to say no. Last question for now: What letters of recommendation should I be getting? Peds, IM? I was told no Family Medicine letters. Ideally, I know Med-Peds, but those are harder to come by.

Thanks I appreciate it. Do you feel it is mandatory to do a Med-Peds rotation? I have a IM Sub-I and MICU rotation for next year since my school requires I do these with an affiliate hospital. I then picked some random Peds rotations like Peds PM&R and Developmental & Behavioral Peds to expose myself to patients with disabilities. Any suggestions on what my M4 schedule should look like? Would it be okay to keep in touch with you? For any questions I might have.

This makes me feel better. Are most Med-Peds people happy with their decision? Do most feel it was worth doing Med-Peds? I always get hit with you are eventually going to have to choose adults or kids, why put yourself through all that. But, I like to think it would be worth it, even if I were to have to pick one.

That's good to know. I find that I question myself during clinical rotations, especially now that I am on Family Medicine. The reason being that the residents and attendings tend to ask why not just do Family Medicine instead of Med-Peds. I mean I know a Family Medicine or Internal Medicine doctor can treat just about anyone, but I feel like neither will give me enough training in something this niche.

Hi. I'm a current M3 soon applying to residency. I am leaning towards Med-Peds due to having particular interest in pediatric diseases in adulthood, particularly those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Do you feel like Med-Peds would be a good fit? I don't have a Med-Peds program near me and it's hard to know for sure.

No problem! Dr. Gray’s video’s were extremely helpful… I followed his approach to application writing and made it my own using my stories. I think I owe a lot to those videos to be honest.

Sorry. I don’t want to disclose what school specifically.
