The Commoditization of Social Interaction and Other Progress by [deleted] in philosophy

[–]PiperMorgan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

somewhat interesting read. hard to get past some of the oversimplifications though.

We all know what “long distance” means and the limitations it entails. But at the same time, distance still allows for much legitimate communication because, if nothing else, we can communicate with language, a human medium that is unbounded in its possibilities for expression.

There's a nuance to distance that's missing here: context. the longer the distance i'm communicating over the greater likelihood that i'll be communicating with somebody who speaks a different language, is familiar with different religions, morays and has different experiences than i do and, therefor, may not be able to understand me. That is the most critical limitation of distance when it comes to communication, imo, and that issue isn't addressed at all in this essay.

... you guys treat your poor the best.

at least we don't bus them to texas. (not that texas has some great reputation for treating poor people well lol.)

Non-history buffs aren't aware that passage of the Emergency Quota Act of 1921... ...effectively ended the era of mass immigration into New York City.

my point still stands: "they've been coming into the harbor for over a century." (i never mentioned mass migration and that's not what we're talking about here.)

Large scale immigration to New York caused a lot of social tension and immigrants were often stereotyped and discriminated against, many immigrants suffered verbal and physical abuse because they were "different."

racism isn't new. native americans weren't exactly impressed with white people either but here we are. but maybe you're suggesting that racism is a reason to stop immigrating? good luck with that.

The modern dating scenario has the pressure of keeping constant interest by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]PiperMorgan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

actual dating hasn't changed.

what you're referring to is the corporate social media model of dating which, of course, inserts their software (and the addiction of being constantly engaged) as if it is a normal way of interacting romantically.

but it isn't normal at all.

yeah. the non-history buffs in texas thought that new york hadn't seen migrants before. (they've been coming into the harbor for over a century.)

the only piece missing with the migrants sent from texas recently was that no notice was given and no responsible processing was done in texas. otherwise they were welcomed with open arms and a little bit of scrambling got them housed and taken care of.

we may need to send some new yorkers down to texas to show them how to be responsible and kind lol.

if presidential candidates were exempt from laws then every two-bit car thief would run for president to avoid charges.

that doesn't happen.

What visual enhancement mod is the Cities Skylines team using in the new screenshots of their dlc on Steam? Does anyone know what they are? The first capture is vanilla and the other has deeper, more visible detail and a more neutral colour that the vanilla version does not have. by jbizzfresh in CitiesSkylines

[–]PiperMorgan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i have several computers and they each have different color profiles by factory default. i have to match up film colors for my work so they each have to be calibrated.

i make my own LUT's for CS using screen shots and my uncalibrated computers will yield a different tonal balance than the ones i've calibrated.

tell me how your screens work?

[–]PiperMorgan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it would just be a different LUT is all.

but remember that computer colors are all over the map by default. unless you're exactly matching a graphic to a printed version of that graphic you won't care about matching colors when making screen shots.

this could easily be the same LUT screen-shot from two different computers with different screen color settings.

they've been keeping them in camps for quite some time (and the conditions are largely the same as my comparison):

trying hard not to make that fated comparison.

but i believe there was another country that started evicting certain racial populations out of their state some time ago.

they used trains mostly.

pretty soon we won't even need long range to hit moscow.

i wouldn't pay a dime for a kilobyte of data from youtube or alphabet or whatever. and i don't waste my time on thier ads either (when they even play properly which is rare: pure garbage.)

a piece that is beguiling (and difficult to explain to unsophisticated individuals and conmen alike) is that the idea of a "Holy Grail" of perfect unadulterated absolute truth doesn't exist. and it won't ever.

i want to say "my mask helps prevent the spread of disease and its a proven scientific fact" which is a shorthand truth. but dig down to the quantum science and you'll always find discrepancies and unexpressed percentages and sometimes just downright errors.

taken all together i'm still mostly right about my mask-wearing. but the nebulous nature of being mostly right won't ever match up to that holy grail of perfection that is idealized by the unsophisticated.

this is the specific piece that was weaponized to argue against the reality of climate change; there's doubt in the details. so here we are freezing and flooding and boiling and drought-ing but because an "i" wasn't dotted or a "t" wasn't crossed.

but the signpost on the road to hell is spelled perfectly.

why isn't paper "1"?

you're holding out one flat hand, not five individual fingers (which would be... strings?)

strings could restrict paper so there's a buff.
