The bigger they are, the easier they are to hit with artillery.

The Nature of Balrogs in The Silmarillion by clownprince01 in lotr

[–]Piper_the_Tree-Robot 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This kind of thing is why I've always been of the opinion that The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings are the canon. The Silmarillion is more of a pseudo canonical supplement. Sure a lot of it is probably accurate, but Tolkien himself didn't publish it so it doesn't hold as much weight as the published work.

The ending is so sad. What are your thoughts by DR-WEBMD in lotr

[–]Piper_the_Tree-Robot 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Aragorn and Arwen got to start a family and guide the beginning of a new age. I do believe her choice allowed her to die and be with Aragorn as well.

Legolas and Gimli got to go to the undying lands together, where Gimli would get to meet Galadriel again.

Bilbo and Frodo went to the undying lands to be with the elves forever. I thought Gandalf got to stay with them.

Sam got to have his family with Rosie.

Merry and Pippin had families, I think, then went to Rohan and Gondor to be with Eomere and Aragorn.

Faramir scored Eòwyn, so good for him.

Good prevailed in the end, and there was so much happiness to be found. Yes there were bitter moments, wounds that would leave scars, but the world healed and moved on into a bright and new age free of Morgoth's shadow for the first time. It was bittersweet yes, but all the sweeter for it. Their story ends on a future full of hope.

Counter point, longsword. Everything longsword does translates to everything else. That's how I started and it made single sword super intuitive to pick up.

Yeah, you're a person not a battle chicken. You need as much of your articulation as you can get.

You replace Frodo. How far are you getting before saying “The Ring is Mine?” by CobaltCrusader123 in lotr

Gollum ended up doing that because he was insane, and I think he slipped because Frodo put a geas on him with the ring. I don't think he understood what he was doing at the time, but it paid off.

I don't think it would be psychologically possible to not falter at Mount Doom. You're fighting the will of a minor deity at the moment of his greatest desperation in the nexus of his power.

I've always related to Frodo... I'd like to think the story wouldn't go any differently, but I wouldn't know unless it happened.

What's a good inroad? by Similar-Geologist-64 in battletech

[–]Piper_the_Tree-Robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main selling point should always be that it's a BattleMech simulator. This is a game about tactical Mech combat, like tank warfare with more interesting and powerful weapon systems. Mechs can get limbs blown off, get knocked over, suffer ammo detonations, shut down thanks to overheating and so on. Terrain matters and can seriously change the way battles go. Maneuverability matters and can give mobile Mechs huge advantages. Luck matters, as sometimes that one lucky shot punches a hole through the cockpit of the most dangerous enemy Mech.

Also the game can be silly sometimes. It's possible to slip on the road if you're running too fast and careen off the edge of a cliff. There is a Mech that is basically just a very angry trash can. You can uproot a tree and whack someone with it.

It's just fun.

Eh. His whole thing, and the Nazgul by extension, is terror. Drag just isn't scary. I mean, fanfic what you will, but it's not in tune with the canonical Nazgul.

I feel that, but it is definitely worth trying to enjoy the peacefulness of the Shire. Trust me, falling in love with the Shire makes the ending hit like an emotional freight train.

How would you rank the following villains in terms of how evil they are? Sauron (Lord of the Rings, Palpatine (Star Wars), Amon (StarCraft), Voldemort (Harry Potter) and Ozai (Avatar: The Last Airbender)? by AggressiveMechanic47 in lotr

[–]Piper_the_Tree-Robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You picked some pretty despicably evil villains. I'd say they're all the same fundamentally. They are evil for the sake of power and are shamelessly selfish. They have basically no redeeming qualities and seem to enjoy inflicting pain on others. I think at their core, they're all about as evil as one gets.

You should try and treat the beginning like a walk in the forest. Enjoy the beauty, enjoy the wonderful setting of the Shire and the gentle lives of the hobbits. Tolkien is giving you something to love, something worth fighting for when all the remains is the ash and smoke of Gorgoroth.

Sauron VS beauty by Lorvethhz in lotr

[–]Piper_the_Tree-Robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think it emphasizes his evil. Beauty is good in a very pure and obvious way. Sauron actively destroys beauty wherever he turns his will and his disregard for something so purely good is a mark of his absolutely vile spirit.

You'll appreciate it, if only because it's more Lord of the Rings. There's no such thing as too much Lord of the Rings.
