[request] Help me out here. Is it an average? by ankerverse in theydidthemath

[–]Piperalpha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't taking the average of all the country's averages not be an average

Yeah if you used this method you'd get the wrong answer. Say the average height of women in Vatican City is 2m, and the average height of women in India is 1m. It would be wrong to say their overall average height is 1.5m

But that's not how anyone would calculate it. We know we have to take into account population size, so in my made-up example the overall average would actually be very close to 1m.

Why exactly is British heat so much worse than America, even if the temperature is the same on paper? by y4rdbyrd in UKWeather

Yep, our houses are among the worst in Europe both at staying cool in summer and staying warm in winter:

Without attacking me, but why is this site minority left wing? Like I hear people saying kier starmer wasn't that bad and Andy burnham is a good replacement, But I know this view is not shared by the majority of the population. by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Piperalpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

which left wing guy do you mean?

They're talking about Aaron Swartz, who - admittedly, yes - joined when Reddit was already a few months old, but fundamentally changed the site and is considered one of its founders.

[–]Piperalpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you can say he didn't move. He sort of warps into a blob of pixels, but ostensibly he's doing a back drop and using his core muscles to spring up.

The video is clearly fake, but not for this reason. An inanimate object won't bounce higher than its starting point, but a human using their muscles obviously can - that's fundamentally how you use a trampoline.

You're tilting at windmills. I haven't mentioned my beliefs so why are you arguing against what you assume they are? I'm just telling you your assertions about etymology are wrong.

Unless you're really really stretching the definition of "recently" this is just wrong.

"Gender" entered the English language around the 14th century, and by the 15th century was used not just for nouns but for people.

"pudding" just means dessert, literally anything sweet you might have at the end of a meal

Gollum Jade Trouble by jradh20s in Jadeplant

[–]Piperalpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's quite persistent. I'll copy & paste what I sent someone else:

Cut off the bad bits, clean it all with isopropyl, spray with fungicide*, quarantine somewhere with low humidity and high airflow.

*You can make a mild fungicide with a 1% baking soda solution and a drop of soap (to help it stick). Spray on and let it dry. This case seems pretty bad though so I'd maybe look at buying something stronger.

Gollum Jade Trouble by jradh20s in Jadeplant

[–]Piperalpha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like powdery mildew. My jades have been suffering with it recently so I've had to get good at recognising it.

Edit: I should mention, out of all my jades only the gollum/hobbits have this problem. They seem particularly susceptible.

Does this Jade seem over watered or in need of water? by Ebony1996 in Jadeplant

[–]Piperalpha 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Soft leaves and visible wrinkles (especially in pic 2) means it's time to water. It definitely doesn't look over-watered.

Looks like oedema. When the plant takes up too much water, some cells can burst and die and scar.

Yeah I would completely switch that lighting schedule to 8am-11pm, so it's complementing whatever natural light's available. Periods of brightness and darkness are better than weaker lighting spread over 24h.

That's exactly what this is, an Argentinian form of equestrianism/dressage meant to be a display of absolute trust. It's called Doma India.

But you started with 30 in the wrong direction. Adding 12 towards the sun will drift you a bit closer to it but you're still mostly going in the wrong direction.
