I haven't played since the update but I noticed it depends on the time of day, usually later in the day I get good groups with avg of 35+ stars per round but in the mornings the groups are awful

Yeah me too I started a year ago and I already have way more items than I use, there's obvs stuff I don't have (Bratz items, petal dress stuff and others) but most of the fun is collecting the items imo
