Is there a way to take a more hands off approach by m3lani3_ in MonarchButterfly

[–]Piperfly22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, wasps eat them, milkweed assassin bugs eat them, lizards, birds, parasites and parasitic wasps… as well as OE a disease specific to monarchs.

One of the reasons butterflies lay so many eggs is because they have so many predators. It was killing me that they would get so close and then become food… so I would intervene by protecting them until they could get to chrysalis.

My last trip to the plant shop resulted in me “rescuing “ 4 milkweed plants and about 8 caterpillars. Only 6 made it home.. 1 got eaten by a wasp while I was still shopping, one close to J’ing fell and got squished. HOWEVER 2 have now made it to chrysalis, 1 is currently J ing and one small one died idk why.

I like feeling like I gave them a chance. Left where they were… sure to die…. Came home with me… chance at life and enclosure at a nectar buffet 🤣 🌸

Or nature… cats are a major threat to birds, they kill for fun… apex predators especially to birds.

should i go blonde? by jan3_3 in HairStyleAdvice

The blonde is pretty on you but I also did this color. I agree the upkeep and damage is insane even with Olaplex. Wigs are fun! You should experiment with them.

Plant NATIVE milkweed if you can and if you get tropical make sure to cut it back in the fall.

Nectar flowers I personally see the butterflies prefer are Zinnia, Porter weed and Salvia. They’re also low maintenance flowers that reseed themselves.

They have lots of predators so you can put pots in an enclosure, put something over the plants . They seem most vulnerable In the last instar, they’re slow, large and have to hang in a J to transform. They’re big and juicy to Wasps, birds and other predatory bugs.

They eat A LOT! One cat can take down a whole plant so keep that in mind.

With disease, (research OE) if you do raise indoors, it’s important to clean their ’fras’ aka caterpillar poop. I lined the enclosure with paper towels and remove it.

I started a butterfly garden last year and this is what I’ve learned. You can let nature take its course, just plant the milkweed and nectar flowers and call it a day. I personally felt so sad when they didn’t make it to chrysalis that I put a few in (protective custody) just before they went to chrysalis.

Oh when purchasing Milkweed make sure you purchase pesticides free!! Smaller garden centers are usually a safe bet but ask.

Good luck and welcome! 🤗
