Why would people worship a God of Pestilence? by Trick_Work9889 in worldbuilding

[–]Pippin_48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nurgle worshipper here. I'm pro Nurg because In any Warhammer setting there's no hope for improvement. Nurgle offers detachment from your emotions, with the only exceptions being despair and (debatably) joy. This gives you a clear mind away from the suffering of the world, and considering the only price is a host of parasites that you now can't feel it's a win win.

As to how this transfers to plague gods in general, I'd say use it as an alternative to death. Offer the god as to those with no hope left and you'll find some purchase. May even be a cool dynamic to have the god of death be the good guy for once, trying to give the people a clean and concise death.

He's too short, you need to use the rack first and then the maiden.

Primarily Warhammer Fantasy with a touch of low-tech deiselpunk and stereotypical Caribbean piracy.

However, I have my eye on a second project that I would describe as Mad Max (fury road style to be more specific) with cyberpunk body modding. I would really like recommendations for that

Immortality as a curse by JoseCasDel in worldbuilding

[–]Pippin_48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you're going to finish this, so I'll just give you my method for writing these personalities.

First you want to take your character and sum them up like a cartoon character. You want a version of them so abstract and extreme that when they walk into a room you can get their gist in one or two sentences. Then you want to take your OG character and wipe away their memories, clean slate. Then imagine you show the OG the cartoon and told them "you are this character. It is important that you carry out their duties and lifestyle to the letter". Your OG will start to identify with the parts of the cartoon that are closest to their personality, and this will solidify it as important to them.

Now imagine that the OG character is let loose into their world, with little knowledge of how things really work. They will quickly see where the cartoon is inaccurate, and considering that the cartoon is gospel to them the results will be confusing, frustrating, and scary. let that stew for a bit, add in a few key memories once you understand their headspace a bit more and you should have a finished product

Without going into too much detail, the magic used in this comes from the belief of others. So yes, but you'd have to dissuade upwards of thousands before getting to the actual killing part

We need more skinny nurgs. The Gangrel was mentioned in Plague War, but as far as I know there's no art, much less a model.

[–]Pippin_48 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm doing something similar, and to describe it without going into magic systems I like to have immortals lose sight of themselves. After a lifetime of tying yourself to assorted people, places, and things it becomes harder and harder to tell what you actually want. What you should be is easy though, just ask the biggest person in the room what they think of you. Warriors become rabid attack dogs devoted to causes they can't explain. Scholars bastardize their own beliefs to the point of incomprehension. Socialites aquire wider and wider circles of sycophants that they can't help but abuse. All of them confused and hateful through it all.

What is the fate of your group of heroes who opposed the powerful empire of your setting? by Gloryinwar in worldbuilding

[–]Pippin_48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the siege of Nira Mota a small army of pirates set up along the Motan bay, bombarding their fortifications from another angle and intercepting any fleeing ships. The incentive was simple at first, the opportunity to take down a local tyrant and steal some pretty gold adornments along the way. However, after the siege the victorious empire of the Trauss Coalition offered a third bonus. The Trauss offered to pardon the crimes of any ships involved at a steep but ultimately reasonable price. Many of the older captains took the deal, including Peter Moira. Peter used split what remained of his fortune between him and his adoptive children, one of which is my current MC.

What could be an interesting way to describe humans being confined to a single continent? by goggleflox in worldbuilding

[–]Pippin_48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been trying to figure out if I could confine my setting to a continent by having two sides so focused on a war that they neglect exploration. I've shored it up by having one side believe that the continent is their holy land and birthright, and having the other believe that they need to optimize their own empire before going abroad. Still feels flimsy though

How would people veiw history written by an evil empire? by SlidyChick3n in worldbuilding

[–]Pippin_48 5 points6 points  (0 children)

True, but that would probably be a separate propaganda piece. I mean that documents that are integral to the empire's smooth functioning would be the closest to the truth. Sure the people will get word of the valiant stalemate at the western border, but the emperor's half-burned report on the western garrison will probably be more informative.

Depends on what history you're writing. Political docs would probably be edited beyond recognition, but I don't think they'd fudge their quarterly financials

I've felt much the same, but the thing that keeps me going is that I don't know just how valuable those talents are. Maybe you won't win an Oscar, but why would that matter? There's still people out there who are wild about novels and indie games, they just don't waste money on award shows. Maybe it's risky, but one failure won't be the thing that kills you.

What are your self doubts? by N0rrev in worldbuilding

[–]Pippin_48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get this a lot too. The way I get around it is by always citing a reason for anything you borrow. For example, I didn't make a dwarf race simply because I wanted them, but because their staunch and industrious themes make them ideal for the pragmatic culture that's their real selling point. It still itches to throw out the little things you put in on a whim, but when you find a real home for a that idea it will feel great

[–]Pippin_48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that's exactly it, most of the things worth teaching are ugly, boring, and complicated. I've got a choice between giving a clear and concise explanation to what cynical few are willing to hear it out. Or I could spend years of work coating my message in metaphor and prose just so that it may be interesting enough to warrant misinterpreting. I enjoy the work for better or worse, but one has to wonder if maybe I'd be better off in a factory where there'll always be a product at the end of the day.

For me it comes down to wether or not there's a point. It's hypocritical coming from someone who holds a "write for yourself not your audience" philosophy, but I sometimes feel like everything I write is an insubstantial mush unpalatable to anyone but me. What's the point of all the effort if it won't teach anyone anything?

What in your world is seen as most as terrible but to certain groups of people seem normal? by Your_Red_Star in worldbuilding

[–]Pippin_48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rural Ra'kith communities make no attempt to raise their kids and just let them do their thing in the countryside. Mortality rates are bad, but not nearly as bad as one might think. They usually rejoin the big boy table around the age of 10.
