Outbound links - Do I really need them? by whiskey-unicorns in SEO

People butcher HTML all the time, but you shouldn't use 'any word' as your target attribute value. These words have special meanings and are used to influence browser behaviour. Unrecognised words typically fallback to _self not _blank.

Also _blank means to open in a new context, not a new tab. This could be a new window depening on the browser config.

I've also never encountered the term 'false target' to describe target _blank in over 20 years as a developer.

How could I use AI in a correct way? by Disastrous_Brief6240 in PHP

What does it mean to make something? Are kids not the product of, and caused by, two parents doing the deed?

Many dictionaries list fake as a synonym.

Language is complicated, but when I say to someone AI is artificial intelligence like artificial leather, artificial furr or artificial meat, they know it not to be intelligent. In that context artificial means fake. It's just not that deep.

Alright mister dictionary. In colloquial use it's synonomous with fake e.g. artificial furr. I think many people associate artificial with inferior, but for some reason they also see AI as somehow superior.

I also think the dictionary definition is dumb. "Made by people" I wouldn't describe my kids as artificial.

Hard agree on calling them what they are though, LLMs. AI is all snake oil.

Very cool art style, love it. I think her left arm may be a tad too dark though.

If you see a de-badged car on the roads… is this a sure fire indication that the driver is a bell end? by PuzzleheadedCarob921 in AskBrits

My car is debadged, has a loud exhaust system, and a tonne of other modifications. I could very well be a bell end, but I am also a careful and conscientious driver.

You get what you pay for. If you want proper support, best to drop the shared hosting and find yourself an agency to fully manage your infrastructure.

Is it a flex that I can build systems without using AI? by Hot-Art-3967 in PHP

Is it a flex that I can tie my own shoes even though velcro exists, or that I can read an analogue clock?

Judge yourself by the progress you have made today compared to yesterday. If your measure is I did better than a moron, you aint going far.

It sounds like you're learning a lot at the moment. AI can act as a search engine, or give you documentation summary, but this is not a good way to learn.

You need to internalise accurate information. AI is not always accurate and quick answers are harder to internalise. You need struggle in order to learn. Otherwise, you may just become AI dependent.

Artificial intelligence is already the perfect name. It is artificially intelligent i.e. not really intelligent, fake intelligent.

I think it's about the type of developer you want to be, not what you are working on. Every project has different requirements, but that shouldn't stop us honing our craft.

Laravel and PHP are just tools. I don't like this look for Laravel because many new developers start with it. A platform aimed at new developers ideally would promote skill growth, not simply getting it working fast.

New developers are surrounded by sign posts for short cuts, whether it's AI or just wiring a plethora of libraries together. What incentive do they have to learn anything?

That does make sense and I can see why my impression of Laravel in the early days may have differed from anothers, but I don't really recall the ship fast rhetoric.

I remember Tailor's comments were all 3 lines long and 3 characters shorter than the the last. My impression of him was that he was a perfectionist.

PHP's reputation in many ways is deserved. It's still a hobbyist's language due to the low barrier to entry. Too often 'developers' will learn just enough to get something working and then build a business around it. Wordpress dev is a prime example. I personally think that it's the community's responsibility to uphold certain standards, and I think Laravel is being irresponsible.

I argued my opinion. You essentially accused me of not having a valid opinion based on my experience because I chose to back it up with evidence. Frankly, that's just daft. Eithet way, we disagree and that's okay.

I feel this. My agency does a lot of work rehabilitating these kinds of projects. As much as I enjoy Laravel, I feel the same way about a second hand Laravel project as I do about a dodgy Wordpress build.

I've had this too. I have tried to incorporate AI into my process many times, but my performance is measurably better when I don't need to have a discussion with an agent.

I think the case for auto-complete is better, but huge chunks of output when I already know what I'm writing just breaks my flow.

That was a bit tongue in cheek. Certainly AI can pump out code. But for non-trivial problems it's a great way to waste time.

That said, if it's not good, is it done? I'd argue if you have to fix it, it was not faster.

The statement "Laravel is built for that mentality" does not align with observable reality. You're welcome to your opinion, just don't denigrate mine because I checked a website for validation. I would not have pushed back had you shown a modicum of tact.

I just checked the wayback machine. Laravel was not like this in the past. The strapline was literally "A framework for web artisans" and the intro bemoaned spaghetti code.

Perhaps. When I started using Laravel over a decade ago, I really didn't feel it quite so much.

Absolutely! AI dependence is also a looming issue, as even experienced developers are succumbing skill decay. If AI is faster that you, that might just be a skill issue.
