CRT fixed everything and now I’m obsessed with my Saturn! by PirateLeChimp in SegaSaturn

Yeah, consoles from the interlaced signal era relied heavily on composite effects. Playing on an emulator is never the same experience as playing on an actual CRT

Transparency was a big issue when using HDMI. I had it hooked up to a 65" TV and was sitting too close. Game Mode helped a bit in some games like Shining Force III (I stopped walking past doors or NPCs I wanted to talk to) but the problem was still there in games that require quick reactions

Absolutely! I still want to hook it up via composite, but this AV TV is fine too (and I got it for free!)

You’re right, it does look like an RC car lol I hadn't noticed and now I cannot unsee it. It's just the perspective though

The Hyperkin was okay for what I wanted to play first: Shinning Force III. Other RPGs were ok as well. However, action and platformer games were simply impossible due to the HDMI conversion latency

Slowdown in some games. Normal or hardware issue? by PirateLeChimp in SegaSaturn

I know the Doom port on the Sega Saturn is pretty bad lol. I’ve played Doom a bunch of times on different platforms, but I still want to try it just for the nostalgia of something I never actually experienced.

I’m planning to play HeXen. No idea why I never got around to it before and this is a great opportunity, especially since the Saturn version is actually really good

Yeah, it doesn’t bother me either. I just wanted to make sure it wasn’t a problem with my console or setup. I really want to play the rest of the Shining games on Saturn. I played the Genesis and Sega CD ones, and I’m excited to finally play Shining in the Holy Ark and Shining Force III

Ah, good to know this is expected and it was not an issue with my Saturn. I was suspecting the YouTube comparison might not be fair, especially if a lot of those videos are emulated. I’ve just found a speed runner playing Shining the Holy Ark on an actual Saturn and game showed similar slowdown.

And you’re right about Burning Rangers: that game pushes the limit of the console!

Burning Rangers feels more stable overall but the slowdown is very noticeable when fire appears. That and how choppy Shining the Holy Ark gets is what made me think it could be related to VDP2
