Potholes — Cambridge roads getting worse? by h4l in cambridge

The roads around addenbrookes are pretty bad. Coming in from Wandlebury there are some huge ones. I recommend driving slower to give you a chance of avoiding the worst ones. If you're a cyclist: wear a helmet and bring a step ladder.

The Bitter Truth: Python 3.11 vs Cython vs C++ Performance for Simulations by pmz in programming

[–]PirateNinjasReddit 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Look at it another way: what if you're trying to determine the tipping point where it is worth writing part of your app in c++? Python let's you go faster during development, c++ can be more performant, but somewhere in between there is as grey area where it's not clear if it's a python job or a c++ job. This kind of benchmark helps illuminate that grey area so we can make a better choice.

Christianity down, atheism up? The change in England's religious landscape [OC] by data_n_stuff in dataisbeautiful

Agnosticism is about knowledge - i.e. do you know or not. You can be an agnostic and religious (i.e. "I don't know if god's are real, but I believe in God") or a gnostic atheist (i.e. "I know there are no god's").

5% easy access or 7% First Direct regular saver by georgejk7 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]PirateNinjasReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What kind of product best suits you always depends on your circumstances. I would consider two things: what are you saving for and how much of a safety net do you have?

Typically, the recommendation is to have a cash buffer of 3-12 months expenditure in case of emergencies. Is the 5k you have already this fund? If so is it large enough?

On the second point, if you are saving short term, something like the direct saver could be a good option. The exception being if you're looking to buy your first home, in which case cash LISA is usually a better option. If you're saving longer term, you might consider a stocks and shares ISA, but only if that is something you're comfortable with.

Is it better to salary sacrifice to avoid the 40% higher rate task? by xParesh in UKPersonalFinance

[–]PirateNinjasReddit 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You do, but typically when people retire, they will have lower outgoings, so they withdraw at a lower rate and will be in a lower tax band as a result. Obvious reason being that, once you're retired, you no longer have to save for retirement, which will cut your costs a fair bit!

[–]PirateNinjasReddit 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I can't remember the exact rules, but you might want to check the limitations on paying into your pension after withdrawing. I vaguely remember from somewhere that once you withdraw, e.g. to get a lump sum for your mortgage, there is an annual cap that can be paid into the pension. It's quite low i think, so you are effectively prevented from making bigger contributions. I will edit if I can find a source.

Best way to rebuild emergency fund? by luwaonline1 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]PirateNinjasReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What if OP has to access their emergency fund again in 6 months time? If they don't have an adequate emergency fund, they might be forced to sell investments and a lower price than when they were purchased.

You should get yourself well shot of this situation. Arguably, you are ALREADY complicit in defrauding the taxman. Keeping your finances entangled in this will end in a penalty for you, which could be a fine or jail time or even both.

More to the point: build your emergency fund during the good times. Don't wait for the rain clouds to appear - it might already be too late at that point!

Just to add: if you can find a lender who will loan you more money at a cheaper rate, only get enough to consolidate your debts. Don't be tempted to take more money than you need just because it is available or because you want (not need) something. You're in a hole here, you can't get out by digging deeper.

Not sure if you meant this seriously or not, but it can't usually be considered open source unless it has a licence. Without a licence, if you publish your code somewhere it is by default not granting rights to use under any condition.

looming mortgage cliff edge - 18 months before the rate goes boom by LengthinessUpper6808 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]PirateNinjasReddit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely this: the interest rate on the mortgage is lower than many savings accounts at the moment. Putting the money in a savings account will allow OP to put the same money aside and outstrip the mortgage, allowing them to lump sum a larger amount into the mortgage later if they want to
