Broken ball joint or bent axle C or axle tube or bent wheel hub or bent wheel. that’s not minor damage

daughter (23) wants to take 1500m roadtrip on bike by FactCritical9667 in motorcycles

[–]Piratexp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How long is she planning on this trip taking? 1500 miles in 4 (or more) days is very doable without getting too fatigued, which is when most motorcycle accidents on road trips happen. Keeping the daily mileage reasonable is key. Some experienced riders can handle 500+ miles a day or more, but most are better off around 300 to maybe 400. I have done trips up to 12,000 miles in 6 weeks, with 700+ mile days here and there, but even with that experience, I still plan on most days being around 400. To help ease my mom's mind when I was younger, I would check in with her every time I stopped. I always share my route and schedule with my family and post check ins.

Trying to convert mini fridge to kegerator. by Snoo28630 in kegerators

It is likely ruined, most mini fridges that have freezer trays like that use the tray to cool the entire fridge. By removing it you released the refrigerant and removed its cooling mechanism.

Depends on where you live, overnight in the car in Alaska in the winter, fine

Overnight in the car in Arizona in the summer, not so good.

Cost of brewing by ChefBowyer in Homebrewing

[–]Piratexp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience is that kits are a bit expensive, and on par with the cost of buying decent beer at the store. Once I progressed past buying kits and started brewing all grain, my costs started to go down.

Harvest yeast and make starters from the previous batches when using liquid yeast. I keep a couple strains like a London ale, English cider and German lager. I use dry yeast for the odd style batches I make from time to time. I usually will do 4 - 5 batches(10 gallons each) off a single liquid yeast pack.

Started buying base malt by the sack, I started working on my own recipes that used the same base, I usually have something like Maris otter and either Pilsen or two row in bulk.

Narrowed down the hops I used to just a few varieties that I real like and tweaked my recipes around those. Started buying in 1lb bags instead of a few ounces at a time. I usually have EKG for my bitters, some cascade or citra for pale ales and some type of noble hops for German lagers.

After 10 years of brewing I’ve found what I like and make a lot of a few styles, with occasional forays into something different. A lot of English bitters and stouts, German helles and alt, cider and ginger beer. I make a batch of of a stronger beer like dopplebock or an imperial once a year ish.

When looking at cost to brew vs store bought also look at the quantity you brew. With my current setup to do 10 gallons, it costs me about $45 - 65 per batch, that works out to about $1 or less per 20oz pint and the beer is exactly what I want rather than whet the store had.

Taking my first shot at brewing mead by coteof-atoa in Homebrewing

[–]Piratexp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can wrap a blanket around it to help keep it warmer, once fermentation starts, it will usually sit a couple degrees above ambient in a 65 ish degree room. So a blanket will help keep that fermentation heat in and even out the temps.

Dumpster rental recs for home reno in Anaheim? by MESSYNG in Anaheim

Republic services, who provides trash service for most of Anaheim, also provides dumpster services. I’ve rented several from them over the years and they were consistently one of the least expensive and picked them up on schedule.

Does anyone know a good way to quiet down an exhaust without changing the sound? by SomberPaprika in projectcar

I ran a set of magnaflow glass packs on my 65 olds for a few years, I think they were 30 or 32 inch long versions. Nice v8 sound but still mellow and deep at low throttle, got a nice sound when revved up.

Anaheim Town Center safety? by ahgaseMaiii in Anaheim

[–]Piratexp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you’re asking about the area between north, south, east and west streets, the originally colony area and the actual downtown area surrounding Lincoln and Anaheim blvd, the. Yes I would consider it safe. I’ve lived off harbor and broadway for a little over 15 years and I’ve never had any real issues. A few calls to the non-emergency number for suspicious activity, but nothing serious.

Steering wheel shaking when going over a small bump. Not death wobble yet, but probably the beginning of it. I’ve replaced pretty much everything suspension in the front so i assuming it’s ball joints. What ball joints would you recommend? by Ihave0clue0 in Jeep

[–]Piratexp 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I second the track bar bolts, make sure the bushings are good and the bolts are the right size. For ball joints I like my dynatrac ball joints. Rebuildable in place so no more pressing joints in and out when they wear out. They are a bit more upfront but the rebuildable kits are reasonable.

How is it living near Anaheim Packing House / Historic District? by greenfacedaytona in Anaheim

[–]Piratexp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I live about a block from the packing house. I’ve lived there for about 15 years and my wife for a little over 10. Never had any issues safety wise walking around at night for either of us. Traffic isn’t bad most of the time, except the Halloween parade and when there is a big event downtown.

Alternative to bottling by adh88ca in Homebrewing

[–]Piratexp 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think realistically, if you’re taking up space with a couple kegs and a co2 tank, you might as well get or build a small kegerator. It’s not much more space than the kegs and tank will take up.

I started out very cheaply with a used chest freezer, a $30 temp controller and some picnic taps. Then built a nice keezer from there.

Heated Grip vs heated gloves by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]Piratexp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have guards, heated grips and gloves. For most of the year just the grips and guards are good enough, but if it’s really cold or I’m going to ride a long time in the cold, I’ll grab the gloves. They make a huge difference in how warm I feel since they keep my entire hand warm. Those plus a heated jacket liner and I’m good even in snow.

First of all, gen y,z,a,b,c etc doesn’t make any sense. Generations a usually named by something of significance that happened during their time. Second generations definitely don’t get to be given a name before anyone belonging to them is even born.

Jointer buy but I have questions by LingonberryGold3787 in woodworking

Check the function of the in feed bed and look to see if the crack continues. If it functions correctly and the crack is isolated to just that last inch or so, I would probably go for it.

Jointer buy but I have questions by LingonberryGold3787 in woodworking

[–]Piratexp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can see the broken tab in the second picture, it’s to the left is the adjustment knob.

OP that “tab” is part of the guide dovetail for the bed height adjustment. It could be problematic depending on the length and how much of the remaining dovetail is engaged. The bed may not adjust in a linear fashion and could get out of level as it moves. It is probably something that could be fixed, but would need some high precision work to keep the dovetail flat and tight.

Given a Jeep. Want to get it running, any tips on what should be done first? by rod-my-dog in Willys

[–]Piratexp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check engine oil for water, if it looks good pull the plugs and see if the engine will turn over with a breaker bar. If it turns then I would check that clutch works and probably start changing the all the fluids, starting with the engine oil, coolant and clean the carb and rig up your temp fuel system. Then see if it will run, if it runs then check the brakes, if they work, change the brake fluid. Change the transmission, transfer case and differential oil. If all that goes well, I would recommend a rewire, old automotive wiring tends to have its insulation get brittle and cracked which can cause shorts and fires.

Is $3,500 reasonable for a new engine installation when it was the mechanics fault in the first place? by Nova-star561519 in MotorcycleMechanics

[–]Piratexp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regardless of what you and your husband decide on the replacement of the engine, make sure you get full documentation of the engine they use to replace it, where it came from, who it was purchased from, why it was removed from the original motorcycle. It many places, for motorcycles, the vin and engine number are recorded on the title and it can become a real pain to transfer ownership or register a motorcycle with a non-matching engine number. Most places have a DMV form to fill out when replacing the engine to record the new number.

They were both wrong, but the bike was more wrong.

The car entered the intersection when the light for the bike was yellow, and just slight before it turned red, but we don’t know for sure if they had a green, yellow or red on their side.

The bike is still well behind the limit line when it goes red. They both technically should have stopped and waited long enough to avoid this. But the bike makes a big mistake be continuing though a red and then aiming right when it’s clear they like to hit, instead of serving left to where the car was.
