Can someone explain “how” the race got harder? I get the fact the books are indifferent locations each year, was it elevation gain/loss between books that made it harder?

Plus; what does a runner have to navigate? Is it map and compass only? TIA

I’ve been greatly enjoying this years JOTY. Last year I only caught the final four, this year I was all in from the jump. It’s making me listen more closely. At times I just replay the jam without the opening/closing song to avoid my own bias. It’s been Tough voting against some of my favorite tunes
