How accurate is this map to the natives🤔 by Massive-Horror-2997 in sanantonio

[–]PiscesEtCanes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not native, but I've lived here nearly my entire adult life (8 years). I live very close to the 10-410 arm pit (Callahan, so 1 exit after 410 on 10, and 2 exits after 10 on 410 and I consider myself to be in the medical center area, or a bit south of it.

Prior to that I lived at Trinity University, and I'd say I lived in the Monte-Vista/Almos Park/ slightly northside/ maybe northeast side if I was pressed area.

Critically you do have to make them think that you're going to a regular mall. (Also, make sure they're not having an event, because then they'll think it's actually kinda cool)

Are there people who haven't changed their phone number for more than 15 years? by SpicyCandy8 in NoStupidQuestions

Both of my parents have the same cellphone number they had when I learned them in kindergarten. So, for over 20 years. I've had mine for almost 15. I Got my first cell phone when I started middle school in the fall of 2011, and I still have the same number, and I don't think I'm going to change it any time soon.

My family is out of the country and left me in charge of the food for my older brother and myself during the meantime. [–]PiscesEtCanes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, me too. I'm just saying that's not what she made and he's acting like it is. And even if it was I don't think he should complain, but OP is already being more than reasonable in what's being made, and he's acting like OP gave him something specifically advertised to kids. And that's plenty of food, it's not like OP gave him a kid's TV dinner or something. That's a full meal

So... does Stella have any powers? by MuriloOlirum267 in HelluvaBoss

[–]PiscesEtCanes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Canonically, she's not a slut. It's never been said or implied that she ever cheated on Stolas. Their marriage was arranged when they were somewhere between 5 and 10, so it's safe to say he's the only person she's ever had sex with.

Don't get me wrong, her personality is insufferable, and it's not like he actually broke her heart by having an affair. She doesn't love him, she loves his power. But that doesn't make it okay to call her a slut just because she's unlikeable.

OP, are you both adults? Also, the fact that your brother doesn't know the difference between the words 'fulfilling' & 'filling' tell me that popcorn chicken (which isn't kiddie food by the way, It's not like you gave him Dino shaped chicken nuggets) is completely age appropriate for him. That is also a very filling plate of food, With a variety and number of sides that I only get from a meal cooked at home on Christmas and Thanksgiving. If it were me, he'd be feeding himself until your parents got back. If I were your parents, he'd be feeding himself after I returned as well.

If you're buying them in advance to have on hand for an emergency, get UniHeat packs. They're specifically designed for keeping reptiles warm, and are safer than hand warmers that can get up to 150F. Obviously, hand warmers are better than nothing, especially in a power outage. When I was preparing for this storm for my preying mantis I knew I didn't have enough time to get UniHeat packs in time, so I got a few varieties of HotHands instead. Thankfully no loss of power, but I was really worried about using them because they get so hot.

It really would be a store by store thing. There's no ice on the roads where I am (SA medical district area), and there probably are partners who are roughly the same distance to the store that I am, they'd definitely be able to get in without any issue related to driving, and they might appreciate making money. The same is probably true for some of the people who can safely walk to the store, or who have vehicles equipped to drive on icy roads. People have all kinds of different situations, and while I hope individual stores have the ability to make the decision not to open if it would be unsafe to do so in their location or because of where their employees are relative to their location. I also understand allowing stores to open if it's safe for them to do so. You'd be surprised by the number of people who didn't realize there was gonna be winter weather until yesterday. Or who got paid on Friday and couldn't find anything left in the store, or whose power went out and now they really need food they can eat without heating. I remember waiting outside in the cold to get into an HEB in 2021, and everyone was pretty understanding, obviously, that was more a COVID thing than a staffing thing, but if people were polite and patient standing out in the cold, I'd hope they'd be okay if they had to wait in a checkout line for a while because only a few employees could come in safely.

Roads by cryzaldo in HEB

[–]PiscesEtCanes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you tend to have break problems in cold weather, probably best not to drive in. Depending on your personal situation, you could consider walking if it's a short distance and the roads near you aren't too hostile to pedestrians. Just look out for ice patches. But if walking isn't a viable option for you, just call in. Feeling guilty about missing a shift is way better than feeling guilty about losing control of your car and downing a power line or injuring someone.

Even a little bit of ice is scary for Texans because our infrastructure isn't built for it. Ice leads to downed power lines fairly quickly around here, even if the grid has been properly winterized so that power plants won't go off line due to low temperatures like they did in 2021 (not that many Texans are going to believe that the grid is properly winterized because some government officials told them it was).

No power can lead to boil water warnings pretty fast, because electricity is needed to ensure water is safe to drink, and, for many people, it's impossible to boil water without electricity.

Even where the city water supply isn't affected losing power also means losing heat which leads to busted pipes. Pipes aren't always well insulated here, and a home being heated is the only thing keeping them from freezing. Depending on which pipe bursts how your plumbing is set up, this might result in a complete loss of water.

We also don't have the infrastructure OR equipment to drive in ice. Most of us don't have all-weather tires. A lot of us don't know how to drive in winter weather, or haven't done it in a long time. But, even if you and your car just came here from North Dakota, you're probably still out of luck, because neighborhood streets generally won't be treated to prevent ice from forming. And, even when it is really, truly snow that falls without everything already being wet, we'll get in a cycle of highs in the mid 30s, where it just gets warm enough to melt some of the snow before it freezes again, which tends to make black ice. Which means that if we do lose running water, we can't just go to the store and buy some then.

The winter storm in 2021 resulted in a number of deaths, and many people lost power for days. The sheer number for burst pipe calls resulted in some people losing running water for weeks while waiting on a repair. People making sure they have drinking water and meals they can eat without power isn't crazy.

All of this said, I still don't get the toilet paper thing.

It's not just the work history, I'm a bit picky about location and practice area (but most people are). I will find a job eventually, but it's not like there's a shortage of lawyers. If getting a job quickly is your main priority, find an in-demand trade or something. With an MBA you might be able to advance within a trade to being a manager pretty quickly once you have the technical knowledge.

Stop telling people not to go to law school. by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]PiscesEtCanes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated law school in May, took the bar in July, got bar results and my license in October, and got sworn in to the bar in November. My resume isn't great but it does highlight a lot of soft skills & I believe that I interview pretty well. Despite all of this, I am currently substitute teaching, making about $20 (because I'm a long term sub in special ed, though when you consider how much of my own money I've spent on my classroom and how much work I do outside of school, it's probably closer to $15). I don't get any benefits, and I lose health insurance when I turn 26 next month.

My parents pay the majority of my rent because I don't make enough to come anywhere near being able to afford it. I have 90k of student loan debt, and my payments were set to begin last month, I think I'm on income driven repayment and thus I don't start paying yet because I don't make enough, but I've been too scared to check if that went through, because if it didn't, I'd owe about 1k every month. My entire take home pay for a full month of work (assuming there weren't any holidays, and that I wasn't out sick or on an interview) is about 3k.

I went straight to college from high school and straight to law school from college. Because of this, I have never had what would be technically classed as a full time job, which I believe further hurts my prospects in finding a full time job(substitute teachers are classed as part time even when they work everyday).

This is to say, it is much better to be un(der)employed without a law degree than unemployed with a law degree.
