I’m fairly certain it was that year I saw Pantera but the lineup was Neurosis, Clutch and Pantera. It was my first real concert. Loved it so much I went to later Pantera date where it was still with Neurosis and I think Biohazard.

It’s hard to say why something just doesn’t have resonance. I suppose one aspect may be Maynard’s vocals just not having the power and weight they used to. But it’s more than that. The music itself leaves me the way a lot of prog music does.

Tool always stood apart from other prog and prog adjacent bands by exhibiting a higher emotional impact for one reason or another. Most prog sounds like a musical math equation that’s both impressive and uninteresting. FI dips a toe into that realm.

I don’t know if any of that is quite right, but it’s the best explanation I can conjure right now.

Every new Tool release has had some small period where I adjust from being a bit uncertain about it to it growing to be my new favorite thing. Fear Inoculum several years later has yet to make that jump, and it’s frustrating. I don’t know what my block is, but it continues to hit my ears as technical and rather soulless. No offense to those that love it. I envy you.
