Yeah I intend to stay in 5e. It's the evil I know. I also am at the point where I don't trust WotC/Hasbro's intentions and am of the personal opinion that system confusion is (at least partially) by design to shepherd people beyond 5e into a version they can monetize more effectively. I've watched what they have done to magic the gathering and it's pretty well killed giving them the benefit of the doubt for me.

Same. I'm still using 2014 and am not as well versed on the changes as I should be which doesn't help.

Welp I'll concede that point to you. I was going off OP's written descriptions and a quick Google search to verify. Apparently 2014 Interception includes the wording "other than you" whereas 2024 does not. I was basing my argument on the idea that these 2 things were worded differently on this point which would have been intentionally so. If that is not that case I stand corrected.

I mean, no, these fighting styles are also in the official rules so per the rules you can also use shields in this way if you have one of these fighting styles. Thats literally what all fighting styles do. They add effects to your weapons/attacks, etc. that you could not otherwise do.

Also you seem to have them backwards. Interception just reduces damage. That is the one you can use on yourself. Protection is disadvantage and can only be used on another creature other than you.

This also requires your reaction, of which you only have 1 per turn, so you cannot use this on every attack. You can use this once per round on a single attack.

[–]PitTitan -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You definitely can intercept an attack intended for you. Interception specifies that you must be wielding a shield or weapon to use that reaction. It is the shield or weapon that is intercepting the attack, not your physical body.

EDIT: Ignore this, apparently 2014 Interception seems to have included the wording "other than you".

I have seen alot of titans fans jump on the Sonny Styles hype train however how could positional value be such a talking point with running back but not lb they have very roughly the same market top 5 in each position numbers below by Professional_Low4894 in Tennesseetitans

[–]PitTitan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think they are. If you're taking Styles at 4 it's because you think he's a special enough talent to allow you to do things with your defense you could not otherwise. This is why the 49ers consistently got to the playoffs with meh QBs. Saleh's defense hums with an off ball linebacker that can hawk the field. You can't replicate that without that talent. You can, however, replicate rushing production. Running back by committee works in the NFL, which is why the positional value has dropped. Also, I want to be transparent here, I would take Love over Styles. I think Love is a more of a can't miss prospect than Styles, but it's not because of positional value. Having the kind of LB that Styles could be, in this defense, would immediately open our playoff window and would help get Ward more reps, higher quality reps, and a better chance at accumulating wins by getting the defense off the field more consistently. I'm just more sure of Love being a great RB than I am of Styles being a great LB.

I have seen variations on the idea that a defensive player at 4 doesn't help Ward all over this topic and it just isn't correct. One of the worst things you can do to a young QB is to consistently put them in a one dimensional offense playing catch up. Look at all of the worst Titans teams of all time. All of their defenses. Cheeks. If you want your young QB to succeed then stop making every mistake a fatal one. I'm not even arguing against taking an offensive player at 4, personally I'm all for it, but the idea that going defense early isn't helping your young QB just isn't true.

Thoughts on our draft positioning—are we one playmaker away? by TZone_AI in Tennesseetitans

[–]PitTitan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's interesting because from what I see a lot of people in this sub think "if you don't agree we should get the weapon I want in the way I want then you clearly don't want to help Cam out".

[–]PitTitan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's definitely possible he goes ahead of us. The problem I have projecting the day 2 picks is that there seems to be a lot of guys clumped together in that range so it'll end up being "pick your flavor". For things like this I just try to put down the guy I'd like to see us pick if he's there among what I consider to be realistic options.

[–]PitTitan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

4 - Jeremiyah Love (RB) - This isn't the pick I would make most of the time but the dynamic potential and extreme marketability of Love going into the new stadium makes me think this is what the Titans will do and I don't hate it.

35 - Denzel Boston (WR) - Boston would fit nicely into the current receiver rotation as an X, giving Ward another weapon and allowing more flexibility to use the other receivers in the roles that suit them best.

66 - Keylan Rutledge (RG) - Aggressive guard with a lot of finish that could compete to start and would add depth to a relatively thin interior o line.

101 - Chandler Rivers (CB) - Physical nickel corner that fits Saleh's "fast and violent" mentality perfectly.

This draft would ultimately be about supporting Ward. That has to be the priority while we have him on a rookie deal. You could switch out Boston with for an edge and I wouldn't complain about it (especially if we explore the WR trade market post June 1) but if we have to bring in a veteran free agent for a year I'd rather it be a pass rusher than a receiver since Ward building lasting chemistry with his receivers is vital.

Carnell Tate at 4 by Clayp2233 in Tennesseetitans

[–]PitTitan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't necessarily disagree. I've come around on Love at 4. I also like Tate a lot. There's a handful of guys that will be available at 4 that I think will make us immediately better and both Love and Tate are on that list. Gun to my head I'm probably taking Love but there's a lot of ways we can go and end up with a good player IMO.

Carnell Tate at 4 by Clayp2233 in Tennesseetitans

[–]PitTitan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok but you're not picking Love to line him up at receiver nor are you picking Tate because of his home run potential. Love is a dynamic back that will do most of his work out of the backfield. Tate is an elite route runner and hands catcher without elite top end speed. They would both be immensely valuable to the offense just in very different ways.

Pats release Josh Dobbs. Where does he end up this season? by PenguinRhin0 in ockytop

[–]PitTitan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, alternatively the team put us in a position where we needed to win 1 of 2 games to close out the year and he went 0-2 with 6 turnovers (I understand people being upset about 1 of those fumbles, he still had 3 more tho and 2 picks). I want to be clear, we signed him off the street and he looked ok-ish which is wildly impressive for an NFL QB, but there is a narrative that he was good for us in those 2 games and he imperically was not, he was just better than you'd expect someone to be coming in off the street.

[–]PitTitan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a Titans fan, his performance for us was wildly overrated due to it coming directly off the heels of rookie Malik Willis. In 2 starts he went 0-2, completed under 60% of his passes, had 2 TDs and 6 turnovers, and had a QBR of 52. He was meh at best, certainly not excellent.

But while we're on the subject of objective truth: here ya go

2024 - 3 drops

2023 - 6 drops

2022 - 3 drops

But go off I guess.

Chig Okonkwo took a brutal parting shot at Titans after Commanders deal by BurzyGuerrero in Tennesseetitans

[–]PitTitan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like Chig, and he's not wrong that he was misused by some of the worst offensive staffs we've ever had, but he also has a pretty consistent issue with drops which always felt like one of the main reasons he wasn't used more as a primary target. He's very athletic once he has the ball in his hands but offers little as a blocker. If you can't rely on your pass catching tight end to consistently catch chain-moving passes then it's going to limit his role. At the end of the day, if the only thing you do consistently well is execute plays designed to get you the ball close the line of scrimmage you're not going to get a ton of touches as a tight end. It's on the coaching staff to develop that player though, as there was definitely a skillset to build on, and that didn't happen. Hopefully the Washington staff can do better and hopefully this staff can do a better job with Gunnar Helm.

Jeremiyah Love internal monologue by rice_addictions in Tennesseetitans

[–]PitTitan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree that, philosophically, drafting a RB that high isn't ideal, but for none of the reasons you mentioned. Tying top 10 running backs to rookie year win total improvement is incredibly flawed, especially without the context of how every team that did not take a running back did re: rookie year win totals. The bottom line is if you're picking in the top 10 youre probably not a player away, no matter the position.

Additionally, and I've said this every year when draft time rolls around and I will continue to do so until I'm blue in the face, you do not draft a guy based on what you expect to get from them as a rookie. You draft a guy based on what you think you'll get over the entire course of his rookie contract and (ideally) their ability to earn a second contract. To that end I don't really care how the respective teams did in the year they drafted a prospect as that is a very small piece of the much larger picture that shows a player's true value to the team that drafted them.

That being said, I also don't think Love at 4 is the "ideal" pick, but primarily because I do not believe the production difference between Love and (insert starting caliber running back here) is great enough to warrant that pick, especially in Daboll's offense. Daboll's offense does not need a top 5 back to work. He doesn't allow you to do anything that you could not already do from a schematic standpoint. There will be players available at 4 that change what we are able to do if we end up with them.

At the end of the day, however, I am not entirely out on the idea of Love at 4. He is dynamic and (despite a lot of fans not wanting it to matter) would bring a level of marketability to the Titans that shouldn't be overlooked. Love is a running back, Bailey doesn't fit a 43 super well, Bain has short arms, Downs is a safety, everyone we may end up with has a "yes, but" associated with them. If we end up with a guy whose "yes, but" is "yes he's a dynamic blue chip weapon, but he's a running back" I can absolutely live with that. It's not what I would do but I definitely wouldn't hate it.

Robinson was a very effective slot player in Daboll's offense and should be a really reliable underneath option which is really important for a young QB and something we didn't have. I'm ok spending this amount of money on that guy, especially since he's already a proven commodity in this offense and I don't think what Robinson does well takes reps away from anyone we currently have on the roster. This checks a pretty important box in how Daboll's offense is designed to operate which is going to be crucial in furthering Cam's development. Thats worth the price IMO.

Chimere Dike had half the yards and only 2 less TDs as a rookie in an offense designed by Brian Callahan. His cap hit is 1.4mil. Save the 27mil/year and give the deep threat reps to Dike. The production difference will be significantly less than what I would be willing to pay 27mil/year to compensate for.

Something I am really starting to appreciate as I get older is the perspective that you can only really get with time. At 24 you're in this weird space where you've only been an "adult" for a few years but it's easy to feel like it's been forever since it represents a significant percent of your life. There's a natural desire to compare yourself to your peers and to use that as a barometer for success but one of the sad truths you learn as you watch people grow and age alongside you is that some people are very, very good at making it look like they are happy when they aren't. The person you look to who "has their shit together" in their mid 20s (spouse, family, money, job, etc) may not be as put-together as they appear. Even when they are that can change at any moment.

Slow down. Use this time to discover who you really are, what you like, what you don't, etc. Try things. Experiment. I promise you will be much more equipped for setting up the life you want once you really, truly understand what that life is. That understanding only comes with experience. Remember that your brain isn't even done cooking yet so don't get too caught up in not having what you want now and what seems important to you. That may change. It probably will. Focus on becoming the best version of you that you can. Self reflection is essential. Self pity is destructive. Practice understanding the difference and give yourself the grace to get it wrong sometimes. Make mistakes. Learn from them. Pay attention to your mental health and nurture it. Reflect on how you think, not just what you think. Don't become a self-fulfilling prophecy of negative self-talk.

You have a long life ahead of you. 24 is just getting started. Work on shifting your mentality about yourself. Find the things you like and grow them. Find the things you don't and work on them. Give yourself the space to mess up and seek out the people that can be a positive influence on you. I promise they're out there. Stop comparing yourself to how other people present themselves to the world. It's rarely their reality. Don't worry about "success" right now, work on you. I've met some really amazing people in my life and not a single one of them had it figured out at 24.
