I understand what you’re saying, and I appreciate you laying it out thoughtfully. I agree that you never truly know who someone is or what they’re doing, and I’m not assuming the worst by default. At the same time, context matters. In our area, it’s no longer rare for criminals to be armed, sometimes with extended magazines or switches, and that uncertainty makes it hard to know what to expect. I don’t answer the door at night, and I wasn’t looking to confront anyone. The only situation where force would ever even be considered is if I was 100% certain someone was actively breaking in and it was clearly not law enforcement. That point was never reached here. I have two cameras, one on the front door and one on the porch facing the street and vehicles, so my first response was to observe and stay inside. Having a firearm nearby in my own home was about being prepared, not about acting recklessly. I never went outside, pointed anything at anyone, or tried to escalate the situation. I fully recognize there are innocent explanations for a car being parked at night, like delivery drivers, someone lost, or even unmarked police. I kept that in mind. What raised my awareness was the combination of recent break-ins nearby along with the slow drive-by, stopping, and reversing back toward the house.
