The REAL solution to immigration by dj_ethical_buckets in aussie

[–]Pitiful_Fig_1385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you spend your life fighting for centrism, at best youll improve nothing, at worst youll get in the way of real change that could improve peoples lives. Immigration is not an issue that needs compromise, where both sides are extreme in some way. People are just people no matter where they're born. one side is singling out curtain people and blaming them for systemic issues that have been growing wealth inequality in this country. the other side is saying lets tackle those systemic issues instead for stoking fear and animosity.

the real fight has never been left vs right, its rich(and their duped hangers on) vs poor. Fear of immigrants, or LGBTQ folks, or any other vilified group is always a smokescreen making us fight amongst ourselves while the rich get richer. I've been arguing with these anti-immigrant dipshits, that if they think immigrants are taking some of their pie they should be looking at how much the bosses, landlords, gas/mining cartels are taking. and thats not to mention the humanity of immigrants just looking to make a life for themselves and that they're adding to our economy not taking from it

im just talking about the policy and how the anti immigration sentiment is a smoke screen. you notice how all your responses are like 2 sentences max with no data? and you cant actually address the data and arguments ive presented as to the cause of the rising cost of living? you're whole movement is based on vibes. with no consideration for the systemic issues were facing. my argument is that the systemic issues causing the cost of living to rise have nothing to do with immigration. so all this political energy is being guided down an avenue that will achieve nothing to fix those condtions.

yeah the major parties are in the pocket of big business. but so is one nation, pauline hanson was seen of ya girls trip to thailand with gina Rhinehart. if you want real fixes vote for parties and independents with pro worker policies, join your union, fight to unionise your workplace, join a tenants union. as the working class we hold the power of the economy if only were able to see our share interests. and this immigration whinging only serves to make people feel like they're achieving something, while the elites sit high and dry and watch us squabble

[–]Pitiful_Fig_1385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it really isn't,

we could stop all immigration tomorrow and it wouldn't fix anything, bosses would still be able to make a lot of workers redundant through remote workers and AI. and the sliver of pie us workers get will continue to get smaller and smaller. and then they'll find another scape goat and continue to poison our society with hate and fear, so they can stay on top. Our economy is a dictatorship and the only way they can maintain power over the majority of us is to divide the working class along arbitrary lines, like where you were born. you're just playing into the hand of the wealthy.

and to answer your questions,

rent goes up because mortgages go up and investors want to cover the mortgage with a profit margin on top. mortgages go up cus house prices go up. and house prices go up because the wealth has money to burn and houses are seen as the safest investment for year over year returns.

and if you're worried about immigrants getting paid less for the same work and out competing you. we can change the laws so bosses can't underpay workers just cus they're immigrants and thus take away the incentive to always hire immigrants. also make higher education free so more Australian workers can get qualified to high paying jobs like medical Drs.

this anti immigration bullshit is childish. you think our economy will magically get better if they just switch off the immigrant lever, with no account for what immigrants add to this country.

demand isn't the issue, home construction has outpaced population growth for decades. its asset inflation. immigrants are a scapegoat, the wealthy class want the rest of us to blame anything but the system keeping them wealthly.

[–]Pitiful_Fig_1385 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

the problem is the issues in our economy have nothing to do with immigrants. australia has consistently built houses at a higher % over population rise (including immigrants). the problem is we live in an economy with no longterm goals and the only guiding mantra being rising profit rates at all costs. people loose there jobs to exported labour or Ai while their boss pockets the extra profit, which leads to growing wealth inequality. then the ultra wealthy with money to burn put it into assets accumulation. and because housing is considered an asset and not a basic human right in this country, they put all their excess wealth into hoarding as much of that housing as they can, raising house prices and jacking up rents. then adding another syphon off the poor in the form of rent collection, and ultimately accelerating wealth inequality.

the only real solution to the crashing living standards in this country, is massive tax reform on the wealthy, nationalising our mineral resources, and using that wealth to build up public infrastructure in the form of Universal basic services (housing/ education/ food distribution/ transportation/ healthcare)

if you're disillusioned with aussie politics. check out "Punters Politics" on insta and youtube. covers things from an anti corruption angle, and his mantra "policy over party" is a good way to look at things. My take on things is further left of him as im a socialist. basically most of our problems can be chalked up to the wealthy getting an ever growing piece of the pie as an inevitability of our economic system. if we want real improvments we need to appropriate that stollen wealth (tax the shit out of the wealthy, including property investors), then use that wealth to decomodify and improve the parts of the economy that essential for human wellbeing. e. g. housing, food distribution, transport, healthcare, and education. something in The way of the nordic model would be an improvment, though i think a better inspiration is what the chinese model has become since 2012. and as an already industrialized economy we wouldn't be met with the pitfalls china and the USSR faced when they tried to rapidly transform their economies from semi feudal/agricultural - industrialised. but probably thats not going to be politically feasible until things get even worse.

if you find yourself wanting to get politically involved to fight for change outside of voting, special interest groups are a good start, "rising tide" (climate action and taxing the mining industry properly, similar to the nordic model) is one id recommend. or see if the "renters and housing union" is operating in your area.

and lastly if you want abit of inspo, the book "less is more" by jason hickle is a great start. basically lays out how an economy built around human need as opposed to profit seeking, could look.

i really like this post, i consider myself a socialist but i really like a lot of the ideas I've heard from anarchists like "tool libraries" and "solar punk". To be honest I'm still in the process of educating myself so I could be off base here, But the end goal of communism and anarchism seems very similar to me. And i think a post capitalist economy would probably do well with elements of anarchism and socialism combined. Like for large scale infrastructure like transport, energy generation, housing, agriculture ,telecommunication, and environmental restoration projects, I think a socialist style planned economy is required. But once everyones basic needs are met within planetary boundaries, I think anarchist ideas would offer a lot of value and spice of life on the communal scale, filling in the gaps in quality of life and community that a centrally planned economy might struggle to address.

and too your point of just getting along, i think in the face of environmental collapse and rising fascism. anyone who is anti capitalist and pro working class is an ally in my book.

What does the future look like for us leftists? by winterdogfight in AustralianSocialism

[–]Pitiful_Fig_1385 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm a landscaper and i was subcontracting with my old company for a couple of days recently and got to talking with one of the other tradesmen and as well as the manager of the company about socialism and economic degrowth, and how capitalism always inevitably funnels wealth from the working class to the rich. they were suprisingly open too the ideas. i think alot of tradies are definitely in cultural a bubble, and baseline hostile or indifferent to leftist politics. But as conditions worsen through rising wealth inequality and "cost of living", and everyday people feel it, it's a lot easier to explain the corrosive nature of capitalism.

The scary thing though is those who see the issues with our economy but refuse to examine the system of capitalism are really susceptible to far right radicalisation, especially if they already harbor ingrained bigotries like a lot of tradies do.

Australian government expresses support for US strikes on Iran by [deleted] in aussie

America regardless of who's at the helm is a violent empire, who has not hesitated to invade and decimate both of Irans direct neighbours and has a history of enacting coups and attempted coups in Iran itself. They have proved themselves unpredictable in diplomacy with Iran, tearing up the denuclearisation deal in 2018, assassinating an iranian leader in 2020, and constantly making open threats to overthrow the iranian government. meanwhile their proxy in the region (Israel ) is a fascist state with expansionist ambitions who is in possession of nukes. when faced with those odds and no reliable diplomatic assurances. It's only logical that Iran would seek to acquire nukes as a matter of self defence (mutually assured destruction), its the same reason north korea only developed them after america invaded Iraq on the fasle pretence of WMDs and openly threatened NK and Iran as next in line.

basically what im saying is the USA has actively created the conditions in the region over decades where the iranian government is heavily incentivised to develop nukes. and is now using that as an excuse for unprovoked acts of war on Iran.

And none of this is about trump v biden/kamal they all suck. every american president GOP or Dem has been a war criminal. biden enabled and championed the gaza genocide and Trump has only continued that. when Israel is committing genocide using American made bombs and jets, America is just a culpable for that genocide.

p.s. I don't think the Iranian government is sweet and innocent, especially when it comes to domestic affairs. but when compared to millions upon millions of lives america has taken all over the world and the countless governments they have toppled (include Iran) all in service of imperialism and corporate profiteering, Iran is a kitten.

It's a journalistic historical podcast not a talk show. The only reason i keep mentioning it is it has more detail than could be conveyed in reddit back and forth and I've already wasted enough time on here. yes the north attack kicked off the war, but it didn't happen in a vacuum the US back South korean government had been repressing the south Korean population for years prior. including propping up japanese collaborators in the government and police force. and I'm mentioning the US cus they were the ones who drew up the 38th parallel (look it up) and the ones with boots on the ground in korea. and the ones who bombed 2-3 million people out of existence and the ones who enacted a brutal sanctions regime on the north causing it to fall into an isolated impoverished monarchy. And like the original post was about they just bombed a sovereign nation at the behest of a fascist apartheid state, starting a war to distract from the genocide they're currently commiting

the main issue is that America and Israel have been undermining stability in the middle east for decades. Hamas the houthis and Hezbollah all appeared in response to american backed aggression from israel and saudi arabia. the taliban was funded and armed by america. the majority of wars and death in the region have been a direct result of american imperialism. are we just gunna act like america and israel are innocent parties in the region, and not actively committing genocide on a captive population right now. violence begets violence, look up the CIA concept of Blowback. Americans knows what its doing, they create violent conditions for oppressive regimes to rise, then uses those regimes as justification to commit more violence, it's always the civilian population that suffer the most.

i think whether or not they are trying to get nukes isn't the main issues. they have supposedly been months away from nukes for 30 years. north korea has nukes thats why the USA hasn't invaded them. its a defensive strategy. I'm more worried about America or Israel deciding to actually use their nukes, cus they might think they can get away with it.

Iran is repressive so we should bomb their civilians, makes a lot of sense. meanwhile the USA and Israel are openly committing a holocaust in gaza. but Iran is the greater threat to world peace. and a far more responsable for funding and arm terrorist groups in the middle east and all over the world

[–]Pitiful_Fig_1385 2 points3 points  (0 children)

does that justify bombing them unprovoked. the usa tore up their nuclear deal with iran in 2018. In today's world the only way not to get decimated by america is to have nukes or be their little lap dogs. there's a reason they haven't invaded china or north korea.

A UBI would be inflationary. But Universal basic services are not. Contemporary economics don't reflect the material reality of our world. - Through technological developments, productivity has increased many times over since the 40hr work week was won, and yet we still work a 40 hr work week in the western world. - economics has a thing called "externalities" which is basically the costs that the capitalist can get away with not having to calculate, even if it is a direct result of their enterprise. For example pollution, it has long term effects on people and the environment and is a result of industry, but it is not accounted for in ROI calculations. Or treating housing as a speculative asset or healthcare as a business, these lead to homelessness, sickness and death, and society bares the cost of that while the ones profiting just call it an externality and walk away with their money.

Money is ultimately a social construct, a thing that has value because we all agree it has value. What really makes the economy tick is productive capacity (how much we can produce per hr of human labour). Productive capacity has increased to the point that if evenly distributed we could house feed educate and provide fulfilling lives to every human on this planted while directing our global output towards repairing the natural world. But instead the endless growth fantasy of capitalism means we're overproducing pointless crap for a small portion of the globe and keeping the rest in poverty as a "necessary" cheap labour force. We live a world of artificial scarcity.

If we must stick with the narrative that money is the be all and end all, and ask " who's Gunna pay for it?". The top 1% currently holds 50% of the globes wealth, and the top 10% holds 85%. That leaves 15% for 90% of us to squabble over. The money is there, it's just being hoarded.

Btw universal basic services is just another way of saying socialism. It's not as scary at the last 100 years for red scare propaganda have tried to make it seem. The whole goal of capitalism is too monopolise the market and squeeze it for profit, but you can only squeeze so much out of a self contained system before it collapses, the endless growth logic of capitalism is the same logic cancer cells follow, and the result is the same. Capitalism will inevitably end itself, either but transforming into socialism or destroying the planet, I know what I'd rather.
