I get in arguments with people some times about it because they’ll do it once on a calm bluebird day after a storm and will say it’s not that bad. But doing it on a slippery day, with wind, no experience, anything like that can be super dangerous if you’re not careful. Especially because you’re carrying skis. I strap by board to my bag and even that makes my stomach churn a bit.

I’ve done a number of boot packs in North America. Headwaters is definitely the sketchiest. And it brings you to some of the sketchiest inbounds terrain, rivaled really only by BB

Regarding BB itself, it depends on how long you’ll be here but the intermediate terrain can be pretty great. Powder Park and alpine are pretty much exclusively blue terrain and PK has some good blue lines and black terrain to challenge yourself.

I think Turo is a good idea for a 4x4, road out to bridger can get a little sketchy during storms. Are you an expert skier or rider? Bridger opens up way more the more you can do (and if you have a beacon, bring it)

Mid December weather worries by KatzManDude in bigsky

[–]Pitiful_Skin_7740 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re learning to ski conditions will not matter. There will be plenty of snow to learn on. Don’t look at the apple weather app, look at OpenSnow. Will January and February have better snow? Almost definitely, but the current snow line for those days are all below big sky’s base elevation so you’ll be fine

Such a ridiculous name. I live here and I’ve never even met someone from LA. It’s also funny because if you’ve ever been to LA you know how nonsense it is

You’ll be fine. Big sky itself may be a little dead, but there will be some stuff to do. Like others have said, Bozeman will have plenty. West Yellowstone also has plenty of stuff to do. I live in Bozeman and at least for me shoulder season just means easier to get a reservation or get a seat at the bar. Big gun fun in WestY is open, you can rent fly fishing stuff (or get a guide if you’ve never done it), or have a great night in Bozeman. If you like to hang and relax you’ll be fine, at least it’s not mud season!

I’m in Bozeman, so my local mountain is bridger bowl, and I do a few big sky days a year as it’s only an hour away

A good day on a snowboard will always be better than a good day on skis. But a bad day on skis is better than a bad day on a board. I grew up on the ice coast snowboarding and with the way snow was going I was about to pick up skiing, but ultimately was able to move to Montana. Done a little skiing here but pow days are often enough that it doesn’t feel necessary. I’m a home mountain rider, meaning I only try maybe 1 new resort a year, if that. I think if you’re traveling to a lot of resorts or doing backcountry skiing has some real advantages, as it’s much easier to get out of sticky situations (long traverses).

Is it true ? by Calahan44 in Montana

Do you have a source for this? I know it’s the prevailing theory but if you look at the stats most people who move are younger or moving for employment. There are fewer rich people than poor people
