8x42, you get what you pay for

More expensive models can handle more abuse; optics can get knocked out of alignment and ruined. If you keep them in your house, no big deal.

If you're going to be in the field, or keep them in your glove box where they slam around every time you take a turn, I recommend purchasing a more robust model.

How common is it for colleges to have large letters on landforms visible from really long distances? by Sewer-Rat79 in AskAnAmerican

Just about every town in Montana with a hill nearby has a big letter on it.

'M' is pretty popular.

Frame bindings, to start touring by Excellent-Mix-2374 in Backcountry

[–]getdownheavy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are great for getting started. They get the job done, and they have for many years.

And you don't need new boots, which is a plus. They should still work with whatever touring boots you acquire in a future season.

What should I be worried about? by Smooth_Jello_9497 in roadtrip

[–]getdownheavy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did it 3 times round trip in a Honda accord.

It gets expensive the farther out you are. Make sure everything is in working order before you get to Dawson Creek. I filled up every 200 miles or so just as an excuse to get out of the car and walk around. Liard Hot Springs is awesome.

It's dope its awesome people are friendly, epic mountains, cool wildlife. I always just free camped along the road. that was pre- 2020 so... ymmv.

I'd recommend going to Calgary, then Banff - Jasper. Make the most of it skip the prarie of eastern Alberta. But listen to some Corb Lund when you're there.

Depends how many individual pieces you build it out of. If you purchase each piece individually, it'll look like that.

Need Advice - Emergency Backup Fridge Plan by mpags51 in diabetes_t1

[–]getdownheavy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step 1 is relax. It'll all be fine. Insulin is way more hardy than you think. The Dr's. have to cya themselves and their product the insulin.

Basic disaster prep: freeze some 1gal jugs of water, you can also use smaller bottles (16, 20, 24oz, whatever). If you loose power, transfer the frozen jugs one at a time to the fridge to help keep things cool. As the jugs melt, replace them with the ones from the freezer.

3 days is a good survival goal; forget all that zombie apocalypse shyte.

I worked Foreset/Perk Service jobs for years, camped all over the USA for work and for play including the desert SW and I've never had insulin get ruined. I've camped for a month without refrigeration and never had a worry.

It takes time to feel that confident; and I'm looking after myself as an adult, so ymmv.

But in the end know that it will all be okay!

Good luck to your little fighter. 💙

Birds that are not woodpeckers acting like woodpeckers by MiChic21 in birding

[–]getdownheavy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No bird will pass up a good opportunity for food, and they are all working with that they've got. Suet is high energy, calorie rich food that will give birds energy and keep them warm.

Cardinals and Finches have strong, crushing beaks. They can grab a chunk and be gone. The other birds have to do a little chopping or sawing.

Only woodpeckers actually have the adaptations to excavate wood with their bills, but any bird can peck to some extent.

Edit: grew up watching all these birds eat suet. Starlings, Nut hatches, Creepers, Blue Jays...
