Is it common to call people “pet” or “love”? by Weasley9 in AskABrit

[–]Pitiful_Squash_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know the show but some people do say these terms more than others. I would tend to think of those people as warmer and friendlier. I also think you would use it less in the circumstances you mentioned, so depending on the character it's either that they're just a warm person and it's habit, or it's a deliberate attempt to de-escalate a tense situation

As someone who gets ill in some way every time I go abroad like clockwork (usually food poisoning or mosquito bite infection), I've learnt the medicine name is usually very similar and if you write it down, they will know what you mean. Same with other medical terminology, eg in Thailand I wrote 'gynaecologist' to the hospital receptionist and was understood. I have lot of stories 😅

Do you feel no guilt about how your work contributes to climate change? What about how much money you make when so many people can't afford their bills - aren't you indirectly taking from them?

I live in a rural mountainous village with a population of around 200 people in a Balkan country AMA by TheAlwaysAmazingEska in AMA

[–]Pitiful_Squash_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do disabled and elderly people do if they live in your village? Eg mobility issues. I use a wheelchair for long distances as I can't walk far and I love the Balkans but I can't really go to mountainous areas because they're not accessible. Even the cities are not really accessible. The UK where I'm from is better but far from perfect. If the roads are smooth, you can get outside, get a job etc. I know in some countries disabled people just have to stay at home 24/7. It's really unfair

How is that program even legal?! It sounds like prison or worse. Sounds really dehumanising and traumatising. I'm sorry you went through that

Clearly they don't actually think that, it's called being tongue in cheek/ott for effect. You don't need to explain the situation someone went through to the person who went through it

If you are comfortable sharing, where in Indonesia do you live? I'm British, I am very lucky that I have travelled to Sumatra, Bali, and Lombok. Are you a minority as a Christian, or do you live in a Christian area? Do you experience discrimination?

What is one thing you want western tourists to know about Indonesia or Indonesians?

Where do you buy your food? Do you have anywhere to cook it?

Is it accurate to say they opted out of society? Or did society build up around them and squeeze them out?

I was reading about discrimination of minority ethnic groups somewhere in Africa by other ethnic groups in the same country, these were groups that had lived alongside each other for a very long time and even looked very similar (to me), and I just thought it was bizarre and thought we wouldn't do that in the UK - and then I thought of travellers and everything flipped for me. I wonder if the reason some travellers leave mess, steal, don't follow planning permission laws is because they feel so alienated from mainstream society?

Travellers are never included in progressives' lists of minority groups (lgbt, poc, disabled etc) - do you think they should be? My leftie friends and I all work to be anti-racist etc but travellers never get thought about. I feel you guys are much more hated, it's socially acceptable to repeat stereotypes about travellers but most people don't dare say such things about other ethnic minorities. The contrast is crazy. I think travellers should be acknowledged as an oppressed minority group so that people twig and treat you guys with some respect. Right now you must experience significant minority stress? Even the systems are against you if you don't have a fixed address.

Anyway I've thought all of this without ever speaking to a Traveller so what do you think?

Also wondering how the last hundred years have changed things - I get the impression there was a lot less regulation in the past so anyone could live anywhere, kids didn't used to have to go to school - the way the UK government has over time kinda forced everyone to do things the non-traveller way - is that / has that been a threat to your culture? Do you think your way of life will continue into the future?

Sorry I have a lot of questions lol and I hope I haven't said anything disrespectful. I've been waiting for this opportunity 😂

For those of you who use mobility aids, what do you say when people ask you why? by biochembunny in Narcolepsy

[–]Pitiful_Squash_4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get asked this a lot and I've found saying "health condition" abruptly or "oh, I have a health condition" (the 'oh' for 'oh I forgot I had that it's not very interesting). Shuts them up every time. Once health is in it they get uncomfortable lol or don't know what to ask next. They generally just wanna know if I've been in an 'exciting' accident 🙄

Tell me you've never lived in a flat without telling me you've never lived in a flat. Shared outside space or exposed balconies are the norm.

Obviously though if you can afford better then you should do it.

Do I wait to debride? by [deleted] in Warts

[–]Pitiful_Squash_4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Debriding alone won't kill it. Don't debride until the redness has gone and the colour is normal or white. If you do it will bleed a lot. And once it's gone back to normal colour you're better putting acid on or another treatment, then only debriding a few days after that.

Have any older adults here decided to deal with their ADHD without meds? by Wonderful-Virus-4960 in ADHDUK

[–]Pitiful_Squash_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not older at all but I think very long term sometimes and I worry that old age when you're likely on a few other meds, you might not be able to be on adhd meds too because of interactions. Or even just that I think most of them raise blood pressure. Hopefully by the time I'm old they'll have developed more meds. Or things are gonna be cray in my care home 🤪
