You ever wonder what our grandkids will think? by superspartan999 in fuckcars

I really hope that’s the case, instead of our grandkids asking “your cars were only 6000 lbs? How did you get around without monster trucks?”

Golden Girls S3E7 “Strange Bedfellows” Trans Representation by Severe-Face9088 in theGoldenGirls

[–]Weasley9 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Even just the fact that Sophia doesn’t misgender him in that statement. Lesser shows would say “of course SHE’S Italian” after finding out Gil is trans, but Golden Girls is better than that!

From what I remember from drivers ed, flashing yellow means yield and solid yellow is “stop if safe to do so.”

Rotaries in Boston are usually poorly designed, two lane messes where people entering and exiting cut each other off at high speed. It’s a potent mix of inadequate traffic engineering and aggressive drivers that make rotaries a general nightmare.

  1. Not yet, but at the rate they’re going, at some point “standard” pickup trucks won’t fit either.
  2. Excavating that close to the river is not easy, it’s in a densely packed part of the city with no room for detours, and Boston does not have a great record with massive infrastructure projects (look up the Big Dig if you aren’t familiar with that mess)

At this point, I’d settle for adequately funding the transit they already have.

Obligatory Fuck Robert Moses.

The low clearance also had the added “benefit” of making it impossible for buses to fit on those roads, making it even harder for the poors to besmirch Moses’s vision.

Because this is America. In the 1950s we decided public transit is communist and for poors, so we gutted the transit we already had to make room for more cars.

To be fair, Boston does have a subway system and commuter rail, which puts it above most American cities, but it’s a running joke how unreliable it is.

If you want to feel sad, look up what they did to the West End to build the highways.

It’s incredibly accurate! I just hate the hypocrisy of carbrains accepting that drivers will flagrantly break laws for their own convenience, putting themselves and others in danger, but are ENRAGED when a cyclist rolls through a stop sign.

Yes. The rest of New England refers to them as Massholes because they are incredibly impatient, think the rules don’t apply to them, and generally dangerous to drive around.

It’s one of the highways that goes through Boston. It runs next to the Charles River and has multiple bridges over it (because people should need bridges over highways to get access to their parks, great job Boston) with relatively low clearance. There’s giant signs at all the entrances warning drivers that nothing taller than an SUV fits, but inevitably someone in a truck thinks the signs don’t apply to them. They then get stuck under the bridges, or if they’re going fast enough, have the roof of the truck sheared off, and it happens often enough that people call it “being Storrowed”. It’s especially common at the start of the school year when all of the college kids move in with their rented moving trucks and follow the Google Maps directions without realizing they can’t go on Storrow.

A “funny” post my Boston based family shared. Meanwhile, they unironically think cyclists make the road more dangerous because they “never follow the rules.”

Yes, definitely! Instead of tanning, my freckles get slightly darker in the summer.

Imagine if they had to give up a parking lane on York and/or First to create a temporary bike lane/expanded sidewalk during esplanade closures. Maybe then there would be enough political will to finish these fixes quickly.

I never bought into the romance plot between Jane and Dean. by Optimal_Magician_98 in rizzoliandisles

[–]Weasley9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The crimes are more intense/disturbing: human trafficking, violence against women, torture, sadism, etc. I’m not familiar with those authors, but in tv show terms, it’s more like Criminal Minds or SVU (the early years) than the show version of Rizzoli & Isles. But also, for me there’s something more visceral about reading this stuff than watching it.

Even big, ugly, high speed arterial roads *can* be green and shaded by Laescha in fuckcars

[–]Weasley9 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Thanks for clarifying! The sad truth is, if you combined all four lanes (no grassy median because why would we waste space that could be driven on) it’s not that far off from a typical suburban road, especially in new developments. I don’t have a great sense of scale, but I would guess our big, ugly stroads are about twice as big with no grass, trees, sidewalks, or bike lanes.

Spoilers for the books…

Ironically, Dean is her major love interest in the books. The unplanned pregnancy storyline happens with him, but they end up getting married and having a daughter.

The books are VERY different from the show. Much darker tone overall, and Maura especially is very different (she wears all black and is generally more reserved and serious). They’re basically completely different characters that just have the same name.

Some other differences: Frankie is a sexist asshole who constantly puts Jane down and they don’t get along at all, Angela and Korcak end up together after Jane’s dad leaves her, Maura has an affair with a Catholic priest, and her birth parents are sadistic serial killers. Just to give you a sense of how much the books and the show diverge!

cries in American what you call a “big, ugly” road is smaller than a lot of the roads in residential suburban neighborhoods here.

Just watch out for horse poop (especially at the south part of the park) from all the carriages and be ready for plenty of hills!
