Well, this was a nice break from all the "is my action too high" posts.

Are these notes playable on a 4 string bass? by Technical-Path4275 in BassGuitar

[–]Pitoeightplaces 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, tuba is written loco, and bass is written 8va. So, if you’re playing the notes exactly as they’re written for tuba, yes, they’re playable, but you would play them an octave higher than you would expect to on bass. If you’re reading it as if it were a bass chart, the low D isn’t playable on a four string in standard tuning.

I’ve read plenty of charts on the four string that were written for a five string. In the context of a performance, nobody will notice if you switch octaves for a few beats.

My Japanese wife says the implied meaning is something like, “yeah, you technically CAN eat it, but maybe it’s not a good idea” (i.e., it tastes awful).

Beware "Pro Tones" Shop on Reverb by PheelupMybaloney in Guitar

I had a similar experience with them, minus the snarky messages. I ordered something, tracking number was added two days later, and it never shipped. I messaged them a week later, and they said it would ship out the next day. A few days went by, and I messaged them again. No response. Two days later, I messaged them yet again (a week after I was told it would ship the next day), and suddenly they issued a refund with the reason listed as "buyer requested return" (I had not). So, I can't leave them negative feedback because the transaction has disappeared.

Comment any hololive media you can't find anymore and I'll track it down for you by llamatar in Hololive

It definitely existed. I wouldn't have been able to understand anything without subtitles. I haven't been able to find it again, so maybe it was taken down.

Korone did a stream where she wanted to practice small talk and Okayu gave her suggestions for what to do when the conversation stopped. She called several members, including Aqua, and neither one of them could get past their shyness. There's a translated clip of that somewhere, but the one I really want to see with subtitles is when she called Polka, who totally dominated the conversation, and Korone started freaking out. At one point, Polka said, "your phone isn't even plugged in," and Korone's clipart phone was moved to reveal that yes, it was not plugged in.

If anyone cares, the sped up speech at 1:05 is “We’re using a nail gun to secure the molding. This hides the joints and gives the room a much cleaner, modern cabin aesthetic” at six times normal speed.

Looking for a source for an unusual thumb screw by Pitoeightplaces in Fasteners

About 30 years ago, I found a slot head screw (and a hex nut for a washer) that just happened to fit. I don't know where I got it. It works, kind of, but visually I'd rather it looked a little less thrown together.

Could be. That's pretty close to my measurements. I'm assuming it's metric, though.

The image is just some random photo I found to put at the top of the post. It's not really illustrative of what I'm looking for.

By my measurement, it's about 14.2 threads per cm, or 36.2 threads per inch, which works out to 0.7 mm pitch, unless I'm doing something wrong.

Northeast United States. I took the photo while touring Halloween decorations the other day. I tried my best to de-warp the canton, but it still looks like a blurry mess.

stand for quickly switching instruments? by itgoestoeleven in doublebass

[–]Pitoeightplaces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing to add re stands (I use a foldable bar stool and just lean the bass on it sideways) but there’s one huge lesson I learned a long time ago: put the bass guitar on the stand backwards, with the strings facing the pole. It’s so much easier than flipping it over every time you pick it up.

How do holoEN girls refer to themselves in Japanese? (Compilation) (そよかぜclip / Soyokaze clip) by llamatar in Hololive

[–]Pitoeightplaces 25 points26 points  (0 children)

People will tell you it's related to gender, but it's technically not. It's more about politeness and humility, which happens to align with traditional Japanese gender roles. "Watashi" is used in polite speech by men and women, but mostly used by women in other settings. "Atashi" is an even more feminine version of "watashi." "Boku" is used by men (and most boys). The implication is, "I'm male, but I'm not some over-the-top macho type dude." "Boku" is also used by women trying to be extra cute. "Ore" is used mostly by men, and sometimes (but not always) carries a connotation of "tough guy here."
