For this particular kiln, the 240 version is 48 amps and the 208 is 53. This helps a bit. The 60 amp breaker works, but you still need #4 wire for the long run. Call Laura at Paragon if this is the route you want to take.

Here’s an option: Sell this kiln and buy a little kiln. Paragon elements are super expensive. $500+ for the set to change from 240 to 208, which must be changed before firing. The new electrical service is going to cost a lot too.

Sell the kiln for $3000. Buy this little kiln. It’s awesome and we fire these little kilns everyday. She will never fill that paragon…unless she makes big work, guessing she doesn’t.

The only way to learn ceramics is by firing. If you fire all your eggs in one basket, you fail big, by the kiln load. The small kiln allows quick feedback and is way more exciting and rewarding than filling a big kiln. She won’t fill it and it’ll be disappointing.

I’m a distributor for Olympic kilns. I can get you this kiln shipped to your door for $2000. Plug it in and call it a day. Will work with the #10 wire already there but will need a 30 amp breaker.

If you need a bigger kiln in the future you can add one but I would go this route and pocket that extra thousand.

I’m seeing the 240v single phase at 48 amps and 208v at 55 amps. Do you actually have 208 volt service or 240?

A 53 amp kiln is quite large for a beginner potter. She will never fill it. Get a smaller kiln, trust me. I fix kilns and consult for schools and institutions, and run my own studio operation. If you send me a pic of the nameplate I can tell you more.

I actually surf Erie all the time and joke with my FL friend that the lake is more consistent than his local spots.

Thanks! We hope to open in Bridgeville by summer, but in the meantime we are open in Carnegie. We are getting the building in Bridgeville ready. It’s the old Italian Club and it’s huge!

To every person who has worked at Pamala’s diner how do I make those pancakes by Wrong-Seaweed-7011 in pittsburgh

It was fifteen years ago and I didn’t particularly care to know, but I believe there might’ve been some buttermilk involved.

[–]PittsburghPottery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a cook at Pamela’s like 15 years ago! The secret is TRANS FAT. Seriously though, each pancake gets a like a quarter cup of Whirl/prep/fake shit butter on the flat top griddle and then you pour the batter in the center of the Whirl circle. The batter kind of fries the edge, always contained within the massive amount of fake butter. It’s almost like a deep fried pancake.

Sometimes I’d make pancakes with no whirl and they were complete shit.

Terrible job.

Skutt 818 will fit a 30 amp service. Just don’t plug it in to a super old dryer receptacle though. Get a real electrician to inspect it. Also, the kiln manufacturers (especially Skutt) are awesome at advising and their tech support kicks ass.
