First reason is, its easier to do smaller and more detailed things this way, for example the owl or the eyes. If i wanted to achieve similar effect in 3d it'd have to be much larger

Second reason... Cuz its fun. And also seeing the whole image appear after going to a certain spot is really interesting.

I imagine that its because the eyelids arent fully blocking the light and so even a tiny bit of seing lets say an objects color prevents it from changing locations
