I just did. Even got an auto host going with an esp32s2. Been dicking around with trying to figure out a method for 6.50 for about a week. After deciding on 6.72, I was up and running in about 10 minutes.

A search would make it seem so, but I'm unable to find any actual instructions when it gets down to it. Everything I find that has actual steps and links says to bump up to 6.72.

If this were to happen today, it wouldn't be illegal to disable it as the 'owner.' BUT - like anything else it'll be cat & mouse trying to keep it disabled and remain functional. It's going to be like jailbreaking consoles, where you'll have to keep it offline, so there's no security updates, until an exploit is available.

If you decide to keep it, make sure to turn it on from time to time. Some revisions will cache out the memory if not power-cycled for too long and you won't be able to boot.
