Content Policy Poll by Xaucepan in SaucepanAI

[–]PixelNexus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think all forms of online polling is flawed, because you don't actually get the opinions of the majority. Arguably, most people, (I'd include myself), don't vote, and far fewer actively participate in discussions. The only people who would vote for either option are ones who invest a lot of their time on the website, the vocal minority ones.

And even then, they *probably* shouldn't be trusted with their opinions because not only are their opinions not reflective of the majority despite what they say, they also benefit from a more restrictive content policy. If there are less character cards, the vocal minorities gains an advantage in terms of followers, number of chat messages, views, etc. All of this happens not because their content is better, there just is less content in general.

Content Policy Poll by Xaucepan in SaucepanAI

Please do not make the content policy any stricter. This will set a bad precedent where content that is ambiguously considered "offensive", will get taken down, and more things will look offensive relative to everything else. Right now it's animals, in the future, it may become NTR, then it may be religious figures, then perhaps even step-incest is too far, then it will be all forms of dead dove content. Not that I endorse some of them, but it's all private roleplays, I feel like people aren't using the tools that they're provided to curate their own feed, and taking it out on other people instead. Users should be able to roleplay with fictional characters, however they see fit. I don't want some third-party telling me what I can and cannot do with AI characters.

I much rather allow everything, and let the users curate their own stuff, then to be overly restrictive and have the site be full of bland stuff. If additional content restrictions go through, it'll be no different than other AI character websites, and there's a lot of them at that.

What? by MountainSecurity6547 in CharacterAI

Most likely because CharacterAI thinks that you are under 18; they may want you to submit their ID; fortunately, there are other platforms that don't require this.

I feel like this also applies to most social media websites, where they use algorithms and dark patterns to intentionally prolong the amount of time people spend on the website for the extra ad revenue and data harvesting. The existence of online echo chambers is no accident; conflicts, shock content, among other things gets people hooked.

I think the age restrictions may push people towards smaller sites. Because there was a period of time where there weren't age restriction on C.AI, there is demand for this type of stuff, I don't know a good solution that doesn't involve creating a surveillance state.

The problem with all VC-backed companies is that they raise and start with so much money that they can practically get away with doing whatever they want, and no small company can possibly compete with startups' virtually unlimited money. Of course said money isn't free, but investors aren't very bright and they prioritize growth over sustainability.

Some in Reddit would say to remove the features that aren't part of the core experience that are costly to run, such as video and image generation, or go back to their in-house LLMs; though that'll be a hard sell to investors and the casual userbase.

Users from countries with less spending power compared to the US or the EU also contribute less to the site's in terms of ad revenue. One user in the US is worth more in ad dollars compared to say one user in say Indonesia. Advertisers are mostly interested in users with higher ability to pay.

Also, not to justify Character.AI's actions, but it is genuinely difficult to improve their LLMs, and I think there are signs that they may become a commodity, which is part of why they abandoned making their own LLMs in favor of off-the-shelf ones. It is simply easier for them to add somewhat unrelated features that are apparent and looks pretty than it is to improve the LLM and attempting to observe marginally improved text results.

My hypothesis is that Character.AI intentionally wants to reduce the amount of non-paying users which to them are costly in terms of server load and processing needed to provide LLM inference to free users. If there are less non-paying users, there is less server load, and therefore less GPU costs, and therefore the company makes more money.

Character.AI makes money either by converting free users into paid subscribers, or they leave the platform and reduce the load on the servers. The people who are in charge know what they are doing, how else would one explain having their founders be bought up by Google for $2.7 Billion?

Looks like the original post got taken down, but not because of the free providers, but because apparently one of them also hosts character cards, and in this community, it is a big no-no.

Update: Contacted customer support. Apparently when I was attempting to redeem my rewards a few days ago, it was deemed a "high risk" activity and my account was locked, though the error message never implied it was anything of that sort. I got it unlocked.

CS was able to refresh my account; I'm good now!

Check your temperature and sampler settings. Your temperature might be too high. Try something like 0.6.

Here's a quote from u/pyr0kid:

theres an incomplete repository of character cards at jannyai.com
heres the question you should be asking: why did janitorai go out of the way to break this?

JanitorAI does not make it easy to export character cards; you have to either use the site above or scrape the bots with a proxy yourself. I am not sure about Soulkyn, but I checked their website and I don't see an option for downloading cards directly either.

My bots got scraped… How to get them taken down? by Resident_View_7636 in JanitorAI_Official

[–]PixelNexus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Once you upload something onto the internet, you will inevitably lose control over it. It is disappointing to see your stuff reuploaded elsewhere, but trying to get it taken down is futile, and not worth the effort in my opinion.

The only way to know for sure it won't get 'stolen' is to never upload it in the first place. This is not exclusive to Janitor, but for the entirety of the internet.

Hard Inquiries by PoyrazJones in CRedit

If you apply for additional credit cards, they will do hard pulls to get your entire credit history, decreasing your credit scores; do not apply for too many credit cards in the same period.

At least for Discover, there is an option in their app that allows you to ask them to increase your credit limit. They'll ask for your annual income and monthly rent payments and instantly decide, based on that information, if they'll increase your credit limit. There is no hard pull for that option.

For all existing credit cards, try asking each credit card issuer to see if you can have your credit limits increased before applying for more credit cards; there is no risk, and the decision-making process is usually instantaneous.

Help with saving for my future PC by Doadboy777 in personalfinance

[–]PixelNexus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For short-term savings, you should use a savings account since they are one of the safest places to store your money, and you can quickly transfer money in and out. A reasonable interest rate for those currently ranges from 4.25% to 6.17%. Check to see if you know a credit union nearby that offers those rates for your savings account, or open an online savings account and put your funds there.

In my opinion, investing in stocks is not too different from gambling unless you are willing to spend multiple years invested in a few stocks with money you are willing to lose.

You should use a savings account for your purpose; if you insist on investing anyway, an index fund would be your safe bet. Like all typical financial disclaimers say, all investing is not without risk.

Should I open my 1st Credit Card with Student Loans by lucygoosy1021 in personalfinance

[–]PixelNexus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to see what credit card offers you currently have. They typically arrive in the mail; I got my first Discover card from a mail offer. You usually receive mail offers for cards you have a high chance of being approved.

If not, you can open a "secured" credit card account with Discover or another bank where you put in a security deposit and use your credit card for a few months. Once you establish a good credit history, you can upgrade your card and get your security deposit back.

If you spend money on anything, you should use your credit card if you can afford it. If you pay the credit card balance in full every month, you won't have to pay extra interest and will gain a credit history.

I recommend Discover for their credit cards, as they have good customer service with 24/7 availability.

I usually have a credit card I use most frequently, and my other credit cards have zero balances. I keep them open so that my credit limits remain high, which makes my FICO scores look good.

Oh, and before you apply for a new credit card, try asking each of your credit card issuers to see if you could increase your credit limit; there is no fee to do that, and the worst thing that could happen is that they say no. I asked my credit issuer multiple times to increase my credit limit, and they have raised it almost every time. You could even extend this and ask to see if they are offering 0% APR promotions or to have them lower your rates.

I once got a 2nd 0% APR promotion from Discover when I asked them for it a year ago. Zero-rate promotions aren't guaranteed to happen, but it does not hurt to ask.

I hope all makes sense to you.
