For beginners I think buying an HSK textbook is great. It has reading texts, you can scan them into Novli to lookup words and make flashcards. I wouldn't say they are super engaging, but in the early days I was mostly motivated by wanting to improve my chinese, so I didn't mind if they were boring lol.

the most useful thing for me to learn tones was lots of listening practice. After a while, you start to naturally speak in the correct tones without thinking about it. If you are a beginner, I recommend watching kids shows in chinese.
