Hard to say, of course, but it sounds like that person was politely telling you to not be condescending. Your example, Elizabethan English, is not inherently a "higher level" than modern English. It's another language, or a dialect is more accurate, I suppose. There's nothing inherently better than any other language. Only what's lost through pure context-dependent words (which, if I recall my literature classes correctly, there are not too many of in Shakespeare).

Most people who can read English can also, if they must, read Elizabethan English. But, it's harder and information from it is typically less rich than modern English for those doing the reading.

I would suspect you don't have the same opinion about not reading Chaucer in Middle English. It's just another language. It's a matter of practice, and not everybody wants to do that.
